is my redline 5600 or 6000?

hi, i have a 240z 73, i done have the 73 engine because it dosent have that smog stuff, si its has to be a 72 engine because its the e88 head. in zhome the 240z that have 151 hp at 5600, while th eothers at that have 150 have it all 6000. how do i know if mine is 5600 or 6000? i cant find the specs for a 72 engine. thx for the help

This is NOT true!

1. Smog equipment could have been removed by previous owners.

2. BOTH 72 and 73 engines had E88 cylinder heads. There are TWO different types of E88 cylinder heads. Can't tell them apart without pulling the head from the engine.

3. What RPM an engine makes peak HP at, has little to do with the "REDLINE" of the engine.

Compare the actual serial number on the engine to the engine serial number listed on the chassis ID plate to determine if the engine is the original one.

Bambi is right , the '73 # 88 head has lower compression. Just because the engine plate says the HP numbers you cannot go by that. It depends on where and how the engine was rated and the numbers are vary different. Put the car on a dyno and you will get an idea of what the numbers really are. How many miles on the engine since an overhaul ? Spinning a 30yr + old engine to 6 grand can turn it into a gernade . You don't gain much after about 4500 on a stock L-24 any way.

Baby! If your SU L-24 don't pull to 6.3K at least, It's time for a tune up. Dam guys, Full throttle spin ups keep the cob webs out of sports car motors and Sport Car Owners! 6 grand is "yellow line" territory meaning you may want to not run at long periods.

My 72 has a redline of 7K, and it regularly sees 6K under my foot (even before the rebuild) but I do not go much higher, and it doesn't stay there long. The dynosheets I have seen for stock L24 engines indicate the peak HP and TORQUE are achieved near 5.5K RPM so there is not much to be gained above that figure.

There might not be much to gain over 5.5k, but it sure sounds good

I used to scream my old L24 to 7k fairly often, just for the sound. Backed off a bit with the L28 though. Longer stroke, shorter rods. I just don't trust it as much in the high revs.

thx guys, my engine is fomr a 72 althou th ecar is 73, i know because i toke off the head and look if and it was notched, so its fom a 72, but i won tlike to rev it more than 5.5. thx you guys

Well,the head maybe from a 72, but you'll never know about the block unless you check the serial number.
