240ZX Posted August 16, 2004 Share #3 Posted August 16, 2004 Well, you might want to be a little more specific about the actual key position (i.e., OFF, ACC., RUN, START). The pump should come on when you enter the RUN position. I'm not familiar with the EFI key switch assemblies, but think about it....if you have no fuel pressure (pump not operating) when attempting to start your engine, how do you suppose an engine will run without fuel? Again, in most cases, I believe the pump should be operating when the key has entered the run position. Someone else please add to this. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

beandip Posted August 16, 2004 Share #5 Posted August 16, 2004 So is what the problem is the engine starts and then stops running , is that right ? If this is the case there may be a problem with the switch on the run detent. This allowing the engine to start when the key is turned to the start position but when the key is released to the run the pump stops. The guy that was looking at the car is confused in that carbed engines will run without the pump going because they will run on the fuel in the float bowls of the carbs, Some are equiped with a oil pressure switch that allows current to flow to the pump AFTER oil pressure is there. I had a friend help me with installing a new electric pump and run wires to a carbon fiber guarded switch. It is wired to my fuse box via a hot lead when the car is in the ON possition. Two ways of safety. I can cut the pump off manually in an emergency, and normally by shutting the car off.my 2 cents Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Datsun-Fever Posted August 17, 2004 Author Share #8 Posted August 17, 2004 Thanks for the replys, but, i just talked to that guy, and he said he had a Buick Regal, he installed a electric fuel pump, and had the EXACT problems i did, he talked to a mechanic and he said "Its the fuel pump, need a new one" but the owner of the regal checked the rubber hoses on the fuel line, and it turns out their was a cut in it, and before it compleatly stopped working, it sounded just like mine, poping, sputtering, losing power when throttle was applyed....i also am leaning towards this because it stoped working then i put new fuel line in the engine bay, i checked that, no breaks or anything, so tomorrow ill jack it up and check all the other areas.
