Posted August 17, 200420 yr comment_91572 Hi All,I thought I didn't have an electrical fuel pump because I couldn't hear it. Well, I did have one, but it turns out it was crippled. It was pumping so badly that it was actually impeding the flow of fuel. I replaced it with a universal in-line electrical fuel pump and now the car has good power at all RPM ranges even after driving for a while. By the way, the coolant to the carbs was blocked already, so I knew my problem had to be something else. Now, I've got another problem I'd like to run by you all. When I'm crusing at 3000 RPM and I just put the car into neutral, the RPM will hold at about 2800 RPM and stay there even though my foot is off the gas pedal. If I quickly depress and release the gas pedal in a swift motion then the RPM comes down to normal idle (between 800 and 1000). Is this the way the car is supposed to behave? When I brake (while in gear) I feel like the car is fighting me (because it wants to stay at high RPM).Thanks in advance for any help. August 17, 200420 yr comment_91573 Sounds to me that one or both carbs are not going back to idle when you let off the throttle. Take a close look at the choke cable adjustment , and check the fuel lines that connect the float bowls to the body of the carb for stiffness. They must be plyable for the carb to function properly. this can cause the choke to stick. do not use vacume line for these lines only fuel line. Z therapy has the hoses , parts store hose is too stiff. Just a couple of things to look at. Gary Hope this helps. This must be a pain in the butt in traffic. August 17, 200420 yr comment_91578 Also check your accelerator pedal hinge and the fulcrum cam inside the engine compartment that translates the forward / back movement of the pedal to a sideways movement to rotate the carburator linkages. Those two are notorious for being both tight and having a slight "stick". For the record, every Z I've driven has always exhibited this "sticky" throttle.Enrique Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/12905-vapor-lock-problem-solved-next-problem/#findComment-91578 Share on other sites
August 23, 200420 yr Author comment_92341 Hey Escanlon,You were right on the money! I just sprayed the whole throttle shaft and linkages with lots of WD-40 and my RPM returns to idle when I take my foot off the gas pedal slowly or quickly. Thanks very much. Now I've got to replace my busted speedometer cable. It looks like I'll have to take apart the wole dashboard to do this. I hope I'm wrong. Then, I need to fix a couple of exhaust leaks and minor electrical problems. Then I'll try to pass NJ inspection - Wish me luck! I hope I'm wrong. You should be able to reach up under the dash and unscrew the speedo cable from the head. I did on my car. Twice.
