Clear Headlight Covers

My opinion of them is that look good on a Z. But, are they legal in Kentucky? Here in Virginia they are not, don't ask me why, but they will not pass inspection and you can be ticketed for them. Stupid law but one you should check into before you buy them.

The only problem associated with the headlight covers is that they can fog up. I don't care what the law says but when I get my 71 back on the road I'm putting a set of the fiberglass ones on it, painted to match the body, and am going to use Dzuz fasteners to mount them so that they can be removed at night. Not that I plan to drive the car at night, but it might save me a ticket. If cars can come with hidden headlights like Corvettes and older Miata's I see no reason for them to be illegal. Just because I have to manually remove them shouldn't mean they are illegal. Or maybe I just like fighting city hall. :finger:

The light buckets are a big "air trap", just about the only non-aerodynamic part of the Z's front end. Headlight covers are an excellent aerodynamic improvement for the Z, IF they are legal in your state :finger: .

I do love living in East Idaho where the only thing you will be pulled over for is a Sierra Club sticker. ;-)

Seriously though I don't know of anything they will pull you over for here. Recently came over a hill with my A4 doing about 90 and a state trooper saw me and just shook his head and pointed down for me to slow down. -I was driving over the desert with no trafic so don't flame pls.-

Do ya'll know where I can find some covers?

Nearly all the Z parts suppliers have the headlight covers, MSA, VB, and I believe Strictly Z has them too. Just a matter of finding the right price for your budget. Check out the web links to get catalogs from MSA and VB, or check on strictly Z's web site. There are probably a lot more places to get them, these are just the ones off the top of my head.

No Jeremiah, I didn't just make that up.:P

Dzus fasteners are the quarter turn fasteners that racers hold body panels on with. A simple flick of a tool and they are spring loaded and pop out releasing the panel. I want to put the solid ones on mine, so if I get pulled over I can take a dime and pop them off. If a Corvette can run around with flip up headlights that don't always work, maybe I can say manual release is the better idea, and not get a ticket.LOL This remains to be seen though, stay tuned another year or so till I get the car done.

Sounds like a heck of an idea...my wife bought me a set of clear covers from MSA years ago, i never installed 'em (was waiting for new paint..) Now that i have the yellow 74, maybe i'll just steal your plan & put 'em on. Where would i find these fasteners? Thankzzz! JA

Have you seen the ones with the chrome trim around the edge ? I saw a set on a '73 Z and was told that they were origional that came from Datsun and he unrapped them himself. But they really look good. He got them in europe.

Actually, dzus fasteners were a standard on military aircraft. Many pieces of equipment were secured by those fasteners on aircraft I crewed/flew. usually with slide mounts and guide pins on the rear. Only problem with them is that the overzealous try to tighten them beyond the click that usually indicates seating.
