Shifter slop fix.

Recommended Posts

You must have a 70 or 71.There are bushing you can replace, but that tranny is known for your problem.I replaced every piece rubber and metal in the shifter of a 70 I restored once.It was still hard to tell neutral from in gear.On the bright side welcome to the world of Z cars. You can easily upgrade to a better tranny! Have Fun!! Daniel

Check out the web links on this site. Z garage is good. It is a very common swap to goto a 5 speed box. You might have to cut where the shifter hole is though...anyway, I'm no expert....check out those sites.

Well, if it is the original trans you have the A type transmission. Unfortunately the A type has the worst shifter, it is a very simple swap to put the later B type model 4 speed in or you could swap to a later 5 speed.

Of course you could just re-build the shifter on the A type, not sure the complete list of parts you need as I have taken out the A type from my car and am going to replace it with the B type. The internal shift rail on the B type gives a much better feel to the shifter. Not as much slop, and it is a bit stronger than the A type.

SirJester,

You can put in a later 4 or 5 spd. The problem is the hole where the shifter comes through the tunnel is located dirfferently on the A type trans that came in a 70. Youwill have to cut out some of the tunnel, and I think trim some of the console too.

That is what keeps me from putting a 5spd in my 70. It boils down to how original do you want to keep your car.

The website that was mentioned has a lot of good info. Check it out.
