Information about a very rare S30?

I am trying to find out information about a family owned car. It is a Datsun 200Z Fairlady. The car has a 240Z body (S30) but the L20 1998cc engine. It was built between 1969-1970 and sold in Japan.

VIN/Chassis/Frame No:_ _S30 01712 - Note the lack of enigine identifying letter before the S number (they put a H for the L24 engine and and R for the later L26 engine).

So by decoding the Vin number (using information provided by Nissan UK) the car is calssified as Coupe, Right hand drive, S30 (240Z), Number 1712.

Engine No:L20 143383.

If anyone can provide any information/correct any of the above I would be very greatful.

There is a couple things that I am going to point out. First, it is a home market (JDM) Nissan Fairlady Z. Secondly, Fairlady Z (S30), with the L20 that you mentioned was built from late 69'-73 or 75 (I am not sure here because the S31 came out around 74ish, I think. I will have to be corrected on this.). I would not know where to look to find this car, but some of the UK members probably do. Good luck finding this car.

As I think Ben implied, I don't think the car was ever called a "Datsun 200Z". I'm confused - are you trying to find the car, or just information about it? The latter will be easier!! On the site there is heaps of information about the Nissan Fairlady Z and Z-L if you search through the archives. There is currently a thread going on about the options offered to home-market cars too. Perhaps from this you can work out if your car is a Z or Z-L?

If on the other hand you're trying to find out the whereabouts of a long-lost love, I'm sure some UK-based members might know how you could go about finding it!

Looks like you came to the right place :)

I am trying to find out information about a family owned car. It is a Datsun 200Z Fairlady. The car has a 240Z body (S30) but the L20 1998cc engine. It was built between 1969-1970 and sold in Japan.

That'll be a Nissan ( not Datsun ) Fairlady Z ( Model 'S30-S' ) or Fairlady Z-L ( model 'S30' ). From its serial number, it looks as though its a relatively early build date - certainly in the first half of 1970.

VIN/Chassis/Frame No:_ _S30 01712 - Note the lack of enigine identifying letter before the S number (they put a H for the L24 engine and and R for the later L26 engine).

The lack of prefix on the VIN code signifies that it was fitted with the L20A six cylinder engine, as you stated.

So by decoding the Vin number (using information provided by Nissan UK) the car is calssified as Coupe, Right hand drive, S30 (240Z), Number 1712.

The Fairlady Z and Fairlady Z-L shared a number sequence of their own, so number 1712 could still be either model, and any one of a number of specs in each model. The VIN tells us a bit - but not everything.

Engine No:L20 143383.

If anyone can provide any information/correct any of the above I would be very greatful.

Hopefully we can help you to narrow down more details about the car, but for that we need to ask more questions. Pics would be very useful ( and should help to differentiate between the Z and Z-L models fairly quickly ).

One thing I would point out is that you really ought not to think of it as a "240Z" in any way. The "240Z" model was only one of several S30-series Z models. I can understand why you would tend to think of the car as a "240Z", but its technically incorrect.

Very gallantly, too! No shame in that.

One would hope / expect to find information about ALL the first-generation Z cars on a website with the name "zhome", but sadly it seems that some are deemed "irrelevant"........

I can provide pics no problem (I will make some available over the next few days) - the car is however, not in A1 condition and is currently being restored by my father. It was owned before that by my Grandfather who bought it from a shipping magnete in Japan (c1983), he rarely drove it and for much of it's life had it garaged. The decay in these last few years has become quite rapid.

I would like to find out as much information about the car as possible. To be honest it's just nice to hear the car really exists as in the past when I or my family have tried to find out information we have just been fobbed off - Even Nissan UK were unhelpfull.

What is the best way to determine if it is a Z or a Z-L. I have a feeling it is a Z as the car has steel rims and I think (but I'll check) only a four speed box. It does however, have the parking lights and a Webasto Sunroof.

Thank you also for correcting me about the correct name of the car - Again this goes back to my earlier comment about proving the cars' existance. I don't actually think of it as a 240Z this was just the easiest way of describing it.

Do you have any idea of how many there are over here (in the UK)? The car was featured in a "Classic Cars" magazine article (April 1992), it mentioned that it was one of two or pehaps three cars brought into the country.
