Posted August 26, 200420 yr comment_92855 Hi folks,I'm parting with my '72 because I bought a Harley....whoops!I had great fun working on it and driving it (in between working on it), but now it's time to open up the garage for the next projects. I'm not sure what to ask for it as I probably overpaid ($4,100) in February of '04. I was hoping I could get some guidance from all the experts out there. Also, I would prefer to sell it to someone who is an enthusiast as I hope they would appreciate the work I put into it.Here are the specs:1972 240zManual Trans65k showing on odo (I don't know true mileage)Stock when I got it, here are the upgrades I've done:Complete carpet kit for interior from MotorsportFoam and Upholstery kit from MotorsportShort throw shifter from MotorsportAlpine CD player and Infinity 6x9 speakersPertronix IgnitorNew high output coilNew Taylor wiresK&N filters and breather (pretty shiny chrome ones)European (clean) balance tube - ZTherapyRebuilt and tuned carbs - ZTherapy KitPolished carbs and valve coverOther miscellaneous doo-dadsHere are the problems:Gap between paint and new rear window weatherstripping (minor)3 in crack in dash cover (not original dash)Door locks don't want to work externally. I think the linkage inside the door panel may have disconnected or brokeChoke doesn't seem to work after carb re-build. I think it's an adjustment issue.Other than that, the car drives like a bat out of hell and just purrs.I'll try to follow up with some pictures. Thanks for any comments or help. August 26, 200420 yr comment_92876 Steve, without knowing the true miles on the car (65K 165K, or 265K???) how much rust is present, condition of the bushings, drivetrain condition, and doing an actual visual inspection by one familiar with Z cars, one can only quess at your cars value. You might just try selling it for what you payed for it, as a starter. Where in California are you located? If you are not to far away you could drive it by and I'll take a look at it. I'm located in Ventura County. You can send me a private message. August 27, 200420 yr comment_92917 If I saw the pictures and the add , and I were in the market for another Z . My first question is rust , any time I am looking at a Zcar for myself or anyone else for a purchise , the first thing I want to see the under the hood and the batt. area . secound I look real hard at the lower rear front fenders and rocker , then the dogleg , bottom front of rear fender just back of the door. I pull the carpets and look at the floors in the foot wells then open the rear hatch and check out the hatch sill. If all is good , t h e n , I check out the interor and paint and so on . While looking at the battery I check the oil for cleanness and look for leaks and the color of the engine bay, if it is the same as the car. Sound systime is way way down the list and is of no value if the car isn't sound. Your car looks vary clean and stright as much as can be told by the pictures . Tires look good , mags ok. not a plus. How many miles since the engine was gone through and is it a L-24 or ? If the engine is solid as well as the running gear I would put it up for $ 7000. or so and see what happends . there must be a Z shop in your area that could look at the car as a third party so that they would give a unbiased apraisel so if you find a out of state buyer you have it in hand. East coast and mid states find these hard to find. my 2cts Gary really hard to tell like this. August 27, 200420 yr Author comment_92949 240zx and Beandip,Thanks so much for the feedback. As far as rust goes, I only found a small bit of superficial rust under the battery (big surprise) and under the carpet below seats. I sanded and prepped the area under the seats and coated with the rust stuff from Motorsports (I cant remember the name now). The paint is not the original color so the engine compartment doesn't match...the original was brownish. The engine is a matching numbers L24. I tuned and replaced fluids about 100 miles ago. Compression is 150 across all cylinders.I also have all of the original stuff I stripped off (air cleaner and smog pump and balance tube, etc) to give to the buyer. Thanks again. East coast and mid states find these hard to find.Anyone know of any shops in the LA / Orange County areas of Southern CA?Also, I'm contemplating E-baying it, with the hopes that enthusiasts would end up being the winning bidders, but I've never bought or sold a vehicle on Ebay so I'm a bit nervous. Any tips / bad or good experiences / comments? Thanks everyone. By the way...if anyone's interested in the car and wants to come to Long Beach to take a look, e-mail me at spark@fellcapital.com.Thanks. August 27, 200420 yr comment_92961 But that would take the fun out of fixing mine up. Mine is getting there, but since it is also a daily driver, it takes a little longer to restore. It is currently down at the moment for an engine change. I have water in the #6 cyl. so I am swapping out the engine with a L-28. I am going to keep my SUs though. I am also installing the 5 speed tran. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/13010-whats-my-72-worth/#findComment-92961 Share on other sites
