So what you guys are saying is that the vent hose runs off the back of the fuel tank, through behind the internal trim panel (behind the RHS strut) and then down behind the rear right wheel? At that point my hose just points down to the ground and doesn't connect to anything.

Should it, after coming out from behind the trim panel and behind the wheel, reconnect to something? I've always wondered why it vented to the air...

Can't compare Aussie market cars to USA market cars in this area. Completely different emissions requirements were in place when the cars were built.

There are multiple vent hoses on our USA market cars.

2nd pic is of Mark Brandyberry's very early 70 240Z (HLS30-00215 maybe?) Only the very earliest 1969-1970 production 240Z's arriving in the US had this arrangement.

You might be talking about the overflow hose (is it called that). There is a tank vent hose that connects to the filler hose. This hose runs behind the rear RHS panel, through a rubber grommet and then runs behind the rear hatch panel (that covers the tail lights), about 1/4 a way along in dives down though the deck and onto the tank as a vent.

I'll post some pics tonight as that area is exposed on my 71 right now.

Dead right Carl. My 71 doesn't have the expansion tank that your pic shows. The hose I was talking about was no.7.

IIRC, someone mentioned a while back that the expansion tank and other vents didn't appear in Australia until 260Z's arrived.

I don't have an expansion tank and mine's a '73. Could explain why I always find the diagram rather confusing..

Obviously, Nissan didn't see it as causing any problems.

I have seen others in Australia post about gas spilling as they accelerate. Also, in the USA models when you take a left turn really hard with a full tank, gas sloshes out of the filler cap (yes, that high up) so I would think that you guys might have a similar problem?

As for Nissan, well; a lot of companies ignore problems (especially environmental, and expensive to resolve problems) until forced to adddress them by governments.

My experience is with 1971 through 1973 US 240Z's and they all have the expansion tank. As I understand it only the "very earliest" (like maybe the first 500 to 1000 Z's imported here did not have the expansion tank and multiple vent hoses.

Wasn't is mainly a US thing with the fitting of expansion tanks....all that emissions stuff. (makes you wonder why really when the US continues to ignore the Kyoto agreement, but I'm not going down that path again...gezzz).

All the venting mine has is a single line from the tank back to the filler tube and an over flow tube running down behind the inspection panel.

But I get a wiff of petrol when the tank is full and my window is down.....must have a cut vent somewhere. Anyway that is another thread and I'm sure that I've read something about it before anyway...check out the dusty archives.

I just find it odd that the fuel system plumbing was different in both cases. But then again there have been so many differences between markets that I should not act so surprised!

yep, happens to mine as well. a right pain in the arse. most noticeable during hard left hand turns with over half a tank. i can actually watch the fuel pouring out onto the ground in my rear vision mirror. On mine its the vent hose just below the filler opening. A trusty bolt wedged into the hose suffices for track days (needs to be vented after every race), Its like this on all Aussie 240's, im pretty sure the aus 260 has the vent tank however.
