Posted August 30, 200420 yr comment_93316 Hey fellow FI peeps just wondering if anyone knew of a performance AFM upgrade for the 280. I took my 280 to get its brakes checked and my mechanic saw my pressure regulator and said that i should also get a performance AFM unit cuz it will really boost the power on these things... he used to own one so i guess he knows. Im gonna ask him more in depth about it next time i go in but i was just wondering if any of you guys knew of one thanks. August 30, 200420 yr comment_93329 I will map the whole thing out when I get it working! It is going to be on the '72(83 turbo engine). Will Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/13068-performance-afm/#findComment-93329 Share on other sites
August 31, 200420 yr comment_93331 Would that be a mass air flow sensor? I've heard of it being done. It would require more sophisticated engine managment that the early Z has. Let us know if you get it working. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/13068-performance-afm/#findComment-93331 Share on other sites
August 31, 200420 yr comment_93365 A mas air sensor generally uses some form a resistance measure of a heated wire, I am going to use a map (manifold absolute pressure) sensor with GM engine management-and It isn't too far from working right, now! I will outline the whole thing in a technical article when it is proven in the car. It is just getting to the tune it, tune it, and tune it soime more stage-while sitting (roughed in-ugly spagetti accident looking mess) in a parts car. I hope to be spending more time on it in about 2-3 weeks-after the '72 has been undercoated (inside and out), and the bodywork is done. Will Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/13068-performance-afm/#findComment-93365 Share on other sites
August 31, 200420 yr Author comment_93382 well im stoked cuz i went searching last night and found that we can convert turbo AFM's (which are approxiamately 33% larger air flow) to work on lour car and its super easy so for now im going to do that this weekend and see what kinda of a difference it makes. but yes do tell of the MAP system once you get it running exquisite. August 31, 200420 yr comment_93394 Also the BMW 325i 1985-91 has the same Bosch fuel injection and a much larger AFM. It is larger than the Datsun turbo and is already set up with normally asparated electronics inside. It will need some minor adjustments though for the added displacement. September 1, 200420 yr comment_93497 Wow... just stunned. I've been busy converting my Kjet (mechanical injection) 80 Volvo to EFI and prepping to turbo it, and tons of folks in the volvo scene are using megasquirt. It's a trip, I don't see much of anyone using it here.http://www.bgsoflex.com/megasquirt.htmlIt will get rid of the MAF, allows full tunability with a laptop. If you already have EFI, you're looking at maybe $200 plus the laptop if you don't have one. Look into it. I'm going to go that route with my 72, next spring maybe, time's running out for this year.
