Its a cool idea. I was thinking since i have the engine out, and im cleaning up the engine bay why not give it a coat of paint? Well, not being able to decide on a color i have come up with a neat little idea that i think would acctually be pretty cool. What do you guys think about me coating the engine bay with Rhino-liner. Or a roll on bedliner? I think it would be pretty cool to have that texture, and look. If somebody has already thought about this im sorry. I was also thinkin of using that as an undercoating..... Thanks for the opinions guys

If you ever have to work on the engine, you'll probably wish you hadn't done it as your arms and hands will likely get chewed on by the rough texture.

It's your car and your call, but I wouldn't do it on my car.

What is the melting point of that stuff?

I know a guy that has a tool box (one of those the fits in the back of a

truck.) He had it coted with somkinda plastic bed liner and it melted of.

Looks like crap now.

The engine heat under the hood could melt it. Just somthing to thinks about.

I actually considered this option as well. The nice part about going with a painted surface is you can identify problems when they occur. If you used a bedliner product, the problems will be hidden by the rough (and thick) surface until it's too late to see the problem. When I say 'problem' I am mainly referring to RUST.

Anyway, if someone ever wants to buy your car, you might need to do some explaining as to why you went with the bedliner material. This is due to the fact that many owners try to "cover up" problem areas some way or another.

Another reason to NOT go with a bedliner is dirt and water... I've noticed that bedliners can look dirty because of all the little bumps and texture. They basically hold the dirt and require cleaning. A painted surface can simply be wiped clean.

There are a few arguments against the bedliner. I suppose there are also arguments FOR the bedliner such as a durability.

Im not too worried about keeping the liner clean, all i really gotta do is pressure wash it (Im buying a pressure washer). That should keep it clean right? There is no way in all hell that im gonna sell this thing. I am waaaay too attached to it already. Plus, I was gonna take pictures of the process. So then there is proof that there is no rust under it. This car is 99.99% rust free. The only rust is a tad on the rear hatch sill.

I agree with the others on this . You may not have any rust now but most of the liners I have seen although tuff still can fail . Weather from a stone hitting from under the car or if you had to add something or remove something like using a different voltage regulater for and example . If ANY water gets under the covering you will never know untill it is too late . I thought of using Rhino-liner on the inside of the car to seal the medal and for sound controll. I decided not to for those reasons. If you have a 99% rust free car and you paint the bay a different color than the rest of the car, you deminish the value of the car. Reguardless of what color or finish it is if different . Like Mike said " IF you were ever to sell the car , the linner would be a vary big red flag , that would be difficult to avoid even with pictures .

Then what would you guys reccomend for the engine bay? For some reason i really like the flat black. Plus, the flat black would go very well with how im painting my engine.

I think the disadvantages far outweigh the advantages (a cool look) on this one mate.

As for what colour - flat black works for me too. Not too sure how easy it would be to clean though. Maybe a satin black would be easier?

MrMarkDude, well if you REALLY want a flat black engine compartment why not spray some driveway seal coating on. Tuff, doesn't show "scratches" like flat primer, wont get "shiny" after rubbing the dirt off. Best of all a five gallon pail should allow 200 repaints for $12!!!!!:) Could work, but I'd try it on some old sheet metal first. Remember that you'll have to have real paint underneath to seal metal. Nothing nicer than a just recoated driveway.
