L28ET Upgrades

Datsun-Fever

Well, I ca tell you that I too am new to the turbo engine. You would need to do some homework on this. Check out zhome.com and do a search for "Stealth Z" and "Turbo L28 engine in an early Z." Scroll down the left side of the webpage. I know of a couple of things, but this should give you some info.

Good luck.

Here's some mods to boost power...

Intercooler like one from an Isuzu NPR Turbo Diesal

Boost controller

3" exhuast

Bigger injectors

60mm throttle body

Powerful fuel pump from walbro

you can upgrade to a T3/T04e Garret .57 trim turbo

Standalone fuel management such as SDS or MegaSquirt

SHould get ya in the 350 hp range +

BTW there is an 3.1 Stroked L28eT 240Z on eBay right now.

He has over 358rwHP...

but you need a stroker kit.. LD28 crank from an Maxima

The first thing You need to do is figure out what you want the car to do. If you want a 10second quarter, you are exploring the wrong way to get there. If you just want to add some oomph to your car, you might be in the right parking lot.

The next thing to do is transplant a stock L28et into your car and get it running right. If you are unfamiliar with engine swapping the worst thing you can do is slap a bunch of stuff that should work together into a car that wasn't originally setup for it. When you modify the engine (3.1L setup) you change the fuel demands, the optimal intake(turbo), optimal exhaust requirements, and the cooling requirements. The stock 280ZXT pieces will allow the engine to run, but not like it is capable of running. Every upgrade exposes other required upgrades to maximize performance.

I am doing a very similar swap into my '72, a stock L28ET and internals with upgraded engine management(programmable-learning ECM with detailed datalogging, larger injectors, higher volume fuel pump, larger throttle body, swapping a MAP sensor for the airflow meter, larger exhaust, electronic wastegate, larger radiator, electric fan, electronic variable timing, and much more.

I would never try this with out getting the engine running is stock configuration in place first. Plan the modifications after the car is running. It is too easy to get lost and dissillusioned with so many variables to choose from. Change one thing and tweek the system, then change the next thing.

All of the options as stated so far are viable, I guess, but it would sure negate any real benefit of having a BPE. It's your car, do what you want. It's just that you've presented so many possibilities to us on this site in your 140 some odd posts about this car, that it's difficult for me to offer anything. I guess advice is worth what you pay for it. Good luck with whatever you decide and stick to.

Fever,

I thought you dissapeared and were trying to sell your Z. Are you going to stick it out?

It was close :disappoin but i took some time, thought about it, and decided that would have been a very bad decision....You know, some times you just want to give up! but thank god i didnt, i just moved the car to a better garage, and its coming along very well. Cant wait untill the spring, i get to show all of the Talons and Neons who's boss at my school! LOL

Thanks for all the replys, thats exactly what i was looking for.

Oh, and im actually restoring the car very close to the BPE it once was, Original paint and decals, i just have a deal on some engines and im thinking about a L28et for now, because i could Re-install the L28 later on....but their is also the slight modifications i would still havto make, so its still really up in the air. (plus, i was interested on what you could do to an engine of its age.)

Oh, and Stephen, you prove an amazingly accurate point, With all these insane modifications and such happeing to these cars, its hard to not want to do the same
