October 4, 200420 yr Author comment_97293 Hey thanks to all for the advice. I am still wondering about two issues. First, Are the "air Horns" incroporated into the stock air filter a good thing? Is it better to use the stock box (with air horns)than any of the aftermarket setups, like the Ramflo filters, without air horns??And secondly what does anyone know about the little "breather" filter I have on my valve cover? Its a K and N that relaces the hose that goes to the nornal airbox to recirculate engine blow by gases. October 4, 200420 yr comment_97295 Howdy,I've tested on chassis dyno both with and without airhorns....Without you'll get higher peak HP, but loose much of the broad torque curve the Z is famous for........I had about 5 HP inrease HP w/out, not worth the sacrifice of torque IMHO....smaller air horns create higher torque numbers generally while less HP.....lot to be gained and lost with airhorn size shape, or lack of. The hose off the valve cover to the backing plate for filter creates vacumn that can pull out a lot of air borne crap out of the engine while cold....I'm sure someone here can extrapolate furtherYMMVdavid Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/13444-schematic-for-hoses-on-stock-air-box/?&page=2#findComment-97295 Share on other sites
October 4, 200420 yr comment_97305 I am sure the guys here can vouch, but its pretty fair to say the air horns built into the stock air filter housing are as good as they get; Nissan designed them well. That is why everyone here, including myself, recommend the stock air filter housing with the K&N filter that fits the stock housing. Take off that little k&n filter on your valve cover and put the hose from there to the air filter housing....it will just recirculate the gases back into the motor, doesn't hurt anything...with that filter there, the engine compartment can get filled with exhaust gasses, which can possibly smell up the cabin. October 4, 200420 yr Author comment_97308 Alright guys, youve convinced me to see if i can feel any seat of the pants dyno improvments with the stock air box and air horns, since my Z had aftermarket air filters when I bought it. One more thing, what about the hose that connects the PCV from the balance tube to whatever the hell it is connecting it to down below, does that hose just run UNDERNEATH the airbox?? October 8, 200420 yr Author comment_97636 Hi I finally put the box on yesterday, I didnt really have time for a full test drive to see if I could detect any difference but a quick drive was in order. i couldnt really tell much of a change, but the box does look kind of cool.I also happened to drive down a street where I had seen a few 510's parked at a house before. The owner was outside and then I noticed he also had a 72 Z. Turns out he had owned it since 73, and seemed to know quite a bit about Datsuns. He concurred that the stock air horns would give me more torque, less hi end HP.I directed him to the website, hopefully he'll show up here someday. He said he owned about five 510's, many were out of site in the backyard.
