Steering coupler

My recollection is that it won't turn endlessly.

I'm sure the design of the rack imposes limits, too. It was a LONG time ago that I had mine apart, but I have a vivid memory of having to count revolutions of the steering wheel to get the upper part of the collumn aligned correctly with the bottom part when I installed the coupler. (of course a lot of beers have been consumed since then)

Any one have their steering collumn disassembled at the moment to confirm or not? Ed? Will?

Carl, regarding the U-joint bearing replacement. What I found was....you can locate the bearing numbers in the bearing manufacture's parts cataloge but they are classified as "PROPRIETARY" and can only be purchased by Nissan. At least that was the experience I went through. I eventually found a good steering column assembly out of a 260Z in a pic-a-parts yard. Works great with no play.

With the steering wheel straight. You look in the engine bay and coming out of the firewall the steering column comes to a u-joint then bolts to the steering coupler. The bracket between the steering coupler and the u-joint. What is the correct placement of the first joint? Is it up-down or side-side?

Thanks.

I've got a '73 and an '83. Took both completely apart to see what the difference was with the collapseable portions of the shafts. Either will spin endlessly. What stops them turning is the rack (or the tires hitting the chassis with really wide tires). I didn't like the rubber or the urethane couplers. They both flexed too much for me with the big tires. I built a custom setup using circle track race car U joints, bushings and tubing, but I have a race car.
