Posted September 29, 200420 yr comment_96845 I've tried the 'Wanted' Forum but no luck so can anybody get hold of a pair of hinges for my series 1 tool boxes please ? Perhaps just a photo because I guess they are simple to copy ? Never seen any. Thanks, Dave (UK) Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/13459-series-1-tool-box-hinges/ Share on other sites
September 29, 200420 yr comment_96899 I thought that motorsport intended to do repros of the boxes, have you looked on their website or called them? September 29, 200420 yr comment_96907 Is this what you are talking about in you post? Perhaps this picture might help a little bit in regards to the hinges. webdawg1 Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/13459-series-1-tool-box-hinges/#findComment-96907 Share on other sites
September 29, 200420 yr comment_96910 I believe Webdawg1 is referring to this toolbox cover. It is for the Series I not the Series II like in deadflo's picture. Reproductions are often for sale on eBay, at least they were. The price wasn't bad altho shipping made them pretty pricey. Not sure these repros came with hinges, but assume they did. These toolboxes were on the floor behind the seats, not in the rear deck. I appologize in advance if these are someone's images, I promise I downloaded them for reference purposes only and hope it's all right to share this info. Sorry I don't have any pictures of the hinges themselves but they shouldn't be too hard to reproduce with other materials. September 30, 200420 yr comment_96919 The Series I Tool Box Hinges look more like a plastic style piano hinge, without the hinge pin. The plastic is flat with a thinned out section in the middle that allows the piece to bend along it's length. The hinges for the later tool boxes are more like your standard small brass hinge you can get at a hardware store for small boxes / doors. When I was looking to "create" a replacement hinge for a pair of Series I lids, I thought of using either piano hinge, or a rubber strip sandwhiched between the box lids and a piece of flat stock metal, then riveted or screwed / bolted together.2¢Enrique Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/13459-series-1-tool-box-hinges/#findComment-96919 Share on other sites
September 30, 200420 yr comment_96923 Here's some of the tool box covers. Can't see the hinges, but rzola can give you any info you need. Very trustworthy seller too.http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7925379792&category=33640 Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/13459-series-1-tool-box-hinges/#findComment-96923 Share on other sites

September 30, 200420 yr comment_96950 Thanks guys. I've emailed RZola. Dave These were listed previously by Rzola and at that time they did not include hinges. Better luck this time. Incidentally I did buy some broken tool box lids ( not from Rzola) just for the spare hinges, but they never arrived Andrew Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/13459-series-1-tool-box-hinges/#findComment-96950 Share on other sites
September 30, 200420 yr comment_96963 Hi guys,I checked out Bob Zola's add and noticed the tops of the boxes where the knob attaches looks perfect. Usually, the slot corners chip off, crack and break. I was a little surprised to see them for $40. They could easily be reproductions, but the repro is just as good as the original. The hinge is a thick strip of soft plastic that is pinched along the axis of the hinge so that it bends easily. One leaf is riveted to the lid. The other leaf has holes for a pan head / phillips screw and washer to the body. September 30, 200420 yr comment_96980 I would think that if push came to shove, one could just rivet in a section of standard piano hinge and be done with it. It may not be original but it would for sure be more durable and outlast the original plastic hinges! However, piano hinge painted black would be a fine replacement. I'm picky, but not that picky.
