Rebuilding and Replacing Engine

Hey texas,

I'm rebuilding/refreshing an L28 at the moment. Brand new head, rings etc. Can't stress enough, as others will, to keeping things Clean, and In Order! (parts, tools, notes,etc). The more order you have goin on with the engine build, the better. Just a tip.

ignition system.... why not a plain MSD 6? anyway, you have compiled a good list. make sure you go through every bolt; wire wheeled, greased, etc.. are you taking off the head? look into copper head gaskets. i'm not 100% positive that it will work properly (expanding and contracting are properties to copper), but i have friends that swear by them. clutch slave cylinder - OEM. some aftermarket ones don't have the hole for the spring!

The starter swap was popular, so you might have one with gear reduction!

The gear reduction is also cheeper for some reason. Here is a picture of the gear reduction variety from Beck/Arney

Will, what specifically is the difference? I may be blind but I don't see anything in that pic that clues me in.

There are 4 differences that I know of. I will try to find an

1)The drive gear is not on the same shaft as the motor, it is jogged to one side.

2) the Motor is physically smaller-gearing gives it more torque than the standard starter.

3) The gear reduction starter uses less current

4) The gear reduction starter is lighter

One side note, there are atleast three versions of the gear reduction starter that will fit, and some of them are not smaller, lower current or lighter...

Here are the beck arney pictures of both, I will see if I can get a set side by side in the next week.

Of the 3 versions that will fit, which one is recommended? Looking for information on how to identify, or what year/model of car to look in, or to say that I have when placing an order.

Not that I need one immediately, but it would be great information to have on the site and in my local files as well.

No, the gear reduction takes care of the beef!

From memory I think it is about 4lbs lighter-but that is not measured, if I get the time, I will pull it back off, and picture and weigh it against the other two(I have a couple of used ones for cores)

Texasz,

A small detail I know, but what about recovering the wiring loom with fresh wiring loom tape? I am doing mine at the moment (bare metal respray inc. engine bay) as the engine is out, my wiring loom is dirty, overspray, underseal, and looks bad against fresh paint. I don't know whats yours is like. Just a thought.
