choke cables

does anyone know if anyone sells choke cables. i've got a 74 260 and mine have gone to hell. i'm manually pulling the choke up and down at the bottom of the carb at this point. i didn't see any in motorsport auto though i'm going to call. any help would be appreciated.

I don't recall the particulars, but I believe a member previously replaced his cables with some piano wire. Sorry, don't remember the gage nor hardness, Hopefully someone else will recall the specifics or can inform you better.

Are your choke cables similar to a 73? Going through the passenger side of the firewall?

I've heard of people having the inner wire replaced at Motorcycle shops. I have not done it myself.

My MSA catalog lists a choke cable for 1974 Z car PN#11-3104...........$132.83 on Page 66 (catalog is at least 3 years old, so price may be different. PN should not)

looks like mine exit right behind the console through the firewall in the center, maybe a lil towards the driver side. I'm now thinking because i tried lubing them and and linkage on my su's that they may not be my problem. they seem to be working now. when i choke my car it seems to magically unchoke itself after a couple of minutes. 30sec to a minute it starts to down in rpms. i dont get it. i know when i was manually choking it yesterday pulling the choke down on the bottom of the carb, they didn't want to stay pushed in. could they just be gummed up so they wont stay on choke? or any other suggestions?

Would bicycle brake cable work for this application?

I dont think brake cable will work , because it is cable and not single wire and will flex. Try the cycle shop. Just for giggles , to lube the '' cables'' disconnect the cables and use a length of plastic straw ,like form a soft drink, and tape it onto the end of the sheath of the cable and fasten it in a upward direction and put some oil in the straw and let it sit over night if you can . The oil will drain down and lube the entire length of the cable.

I also doubt that bicycle brake cable will work, for the same reasons mentioned by beandip.

However, I hasten to add that oil is not the right product to use on cables. It may lubricate them briefly, but will tend to pool in low areas, or pour out one end or the other and attract fuzz and lint to further gum up the cable. It is grease injected all through the cable that is needed. It used to be (probably still is) that you could buy a small tool at motorcycle shops to assist in properly greasing these cables.

I used bicycle brake cables for my choke cables. When I got my 260 the po had a single aftermarket cable adjusting both carbs :tapemouth . Using the old choke handle and two trimmed bicycle brake lines, and a couple of circlips. Works great. Looks good. And cost bugger all. :cheeky:

Don't have any real close ups, but this shows that they do not look out of place.
