Which years came with rubber on the sides of the rear bumper? I've noticed this is not a very popular piece. I'm talking about the piece on the front edge between the body and the bumper.

I can understand why it wouldn't be popular. Looks like something to protect the bumper/body from each other in shipping & meant to be removed before a customer saw it. :sick:

There is an old thread about this - Alan knows a bit about it (fancy that eh?) but the thread is somewhat elusive...

I think the conclusion we came up with is that they were common (standard?) in some other markets, and were there to ensure the bumpers wouldn't catch onto things...

All of my literature and photographs show the "rubber-base bumber" on the domestic cars, S30, S30-S, PS30, HS30, and HS30-H. I have no photographs of any HLS30 with the piece. It is mentioned in the North American parts catalogs as 62692 and 62693-E4101. I recall the past discussion and it was mentioned that the rubber was used to keep the bumper from snagging pedestrians.

Then Datsun decided on the massive crash bumpers for the 280Z's so they could just ram the pedestrians right out of the way. :stupid:
