Posted October 13, 200420 yr comment_98120 I was just curious what everybody currently adjusts their idle at. According to the Hayne's Manual, they had idles down at 550 and 700, where as my timing light recorded mine at about 1060. What is a correct idle, and what do all you have yours set at? October 13, 200420 yr comment_98125 Mine is currently too high, due to carb adjustment issues.Seems like I read in a manual somewhere that 750 to 800 RPM was the spec for a manual trans 240Z. October 13, 200420 yr comment_98126 I remember trying to set mine at about 550 like the decal under the hood suggested but it would stall. Especially when I would run the A/C. I think it idled best around 800. This was over a year ago so my memory is a little fuzzy. October 13, 200420 yr comment_98128 The local Z wiz has told be before that 750RPMs is the correct idle speed. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/13611-best-idle-speed/#findComment-98128 Share on other sites
October 15, 200420 yr Author comment_98268 Well in that case then if I am going to set my idle around 750 does anybody know what timing I should set it at then? Because the book recommened 550rpms at 10 degress Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/13611-best-idle-speed/#findComment-98268 Share on other sites
October 15, 200420 yr comment_98271 At least on the 280Z, there is a vacuum thingy controlled by the vacuum solenoids to increase the idle speed when the a/c is on. Since I have no a/c, I took that off, along with the EGR which wasn't workling. I might put it back on to see if it would help, since it was sucking fresh air and not connected to the exhaust manifold. October 15, 200420 yr comment_98273 I, as Ed does, have my NA L28 idling at 800 RPM. Works well for me at this setting. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/13611-best-idle-speed/#findComment-98273 Share on other sites
October 15, 200420 yr comment_98276 I set mine at 7-8 degrees BTDT.mention of a 280Z "vacuum thingy controlled by the vacuum solenoids to increase idle when a/c is on" has absolutely nothing to do with this thread about 240Z Timing and Idle RPM settings! :stupid: Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/13611-best-idle-speed/#findComment-98276 Share on other sites
October 15, 200420 yr comment_98277 Somebody mentioned that their engine will stall when the a/c is on, so I mentioned there is a thing to increase the idle speed to compensate for the extra load. October 15, 200420 yr comment_98278 Keep in mind, these people have 240Z's which don't have all that crap Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/13611-best-idle-speed/#findComment-98278 Share on other sites
October 15, 200420 yr comment_98279 Boy Carl, you're feeling a bit frisky today aren't you! What's your idle set at today (heart rate). Have another cup of joe will ya! Just trying to pull your chain in fun. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/13611-best-idle-speed/#findComment-98279 Share on other sites
October 15, 200420 yr comment_98280 Mine has always idled at 700-800 but the needle jumps around a little and I'm not sure how accurate it is. I keep meaning to go with a Pertronix Ignitor thinking that might provide more stability.
