difficult to start

My 73 240z takes a while for me to get it to fire up. Once I have started it, it will start again effortlessly. I try to play with the choke and have not been able to figure out why it is so difficult to start. It does not seem to be related to the weather. It has new plugs, new gas filter, new battery. What can I do to figure out this problem?

I bet you a buck you still have the original flat top carburators. My 73 had the exact same problem. The colder it got the longer it took to start. But once it got warmed up it worked like a champ. Unfortunately I can not tell you how to fix it. Don't get discouraged, there are some mechanics out there that know how to work on these carbs. Where? California I think. Sorry.

I fixed mine by swapping out the flat top carbs and installing round top carbs from a 71 (probably not what you wanted to hear).

Hopefully someone here can give you better advice. If not start looking for some early round top carbs or a mechanic WITH experiance. Don't pay some mechanic to "figure it out".

make sure BOTH of your choke cables are working. If one slips you get that problem.

The car has dual weber carbs instead of the stock. I will check the cables on the choke, thanks

I have the same problem. This strarted as the mornings turn colder. I have the twin su's round top and piont ignition sist.

I'm shure this problem it's wheather related.

But I also suspect the float chamber dry out at night.

I have a gas leak on the return line on the back of the tank, this gas leak only appears when the tank is almost full. So if the fuel sistem need to have pressure this will be my problem.

Try this , when starting the cold engine do not touch the gas peddle , just adjust the choke . I usually go to full choke and as soon as the engine begins to fire I push the leaver to about half. Now if you have thin oil in the carbs this can also cause the piston to lift too soon, try 20wt oil. This also might help you. Gary

I have discovered, if I use a few sprays of starter fluid, the car starts right up, and then will restart easily after that. I can see that fuel is coming out of the carb, but I can not figure out why it will not fire up without starter fluid. Does this sound like the webber carbs are not working, does it sound like the choke? Any help would be appreciated.

zover , I am sorry my post was to zhead with the SUs . I don't know squat about webbers , however I thought they had accelerater pumps in them . If this is true , pump the gas peddle a couple of times then hit the starter and it should fire up. Cant help with webbers . Gary
