Water drain holes

If I live where it rains a lot, is there any benefit to drilling drain holes in the body to prevent rust? Has anyone done this before? Where are the best places to drill and how big should the holes be?

The reason I ask is because I popped the plastic panel off by the rear speaker and looked down into the left rear body panel and it looked like water had collected there but hadn't drained out. I don't know if it got there from the vents, or where, but I wanted to stop the rust before it got too out of control and prevent it from happening again.

there is already a drain there . It must be clogged, look from under the car. Also there is a hose from the radio antenna that drains out there. No need to drill any holes there are already drain holes in the rockers and doors and so on . Just look from under the car , they may be covered with undercoat or just clogged. One of the ones to really check is at the bottom of the front fender just ahead of the door , there is one in the front part of the rocker but I am talking here of the gap in the sheet metal of the fender . This is the drain from the cowl and dirt and leaf material will clog this up and rust out the lower part of the fender and the front part of the ''frame rail''. It can be flushed out from below.Gary

If I recall right, the speaker is in the right rear of the car. As such, you might check not only the pillar emblem, but also the gas filler neck cup where it attaches to the fender.

It wouldn't surprise me to discover that the caulking they put around the edges has cracked and is allowing water in. Another place to check is the right rear side light. If the gasket isn't centered properly over the opening, or if it isn't tightened down properly, that could leak also.

OOPS!

It's been a while since I worked on that part, and you guys are right. I added a second speaker on the RIGHT hand side and that helped me to get confused.

On the LEFT side, the same applies to the side light. The antenna mast bolt knob assembly needs to be centered. Also check that the gasket underneath the round part is in fact making good seal all around the mast.

The pillar emblem as well could be leaking.

One last thing to check would be the hatch hinge pockets on the car. Those connect to the pillars also.

I stand corrected, thanks for the pointer.
