A good opinion column that brought to light some things I didn't know about before. Excellent writer also.

Thank you Greyghost.

Andrew: The pictures disturb me also, but millions of people sitting comfortably in their living rooms in the USA, Britain, AND EVERYWHERE IN THE WORLD should think about those pictures and realize exactly what waging this war means to the people closest to it. Families of military, the general population that gets caught in the middle of firefights, etc. There are few winners. (Bechtel, Halliburton, etc)

What I am pissed about is that I opened one of the dead baby pictures with with my 2 year old son sitting on my lap. Fortunately he is too young to know what it is but I would like to be in control of what my children see. What happened to the practice of warning about graphic content???

FWIW we have had overkill of gruesome pictures on UK television and in the newspapers, not much in the way of supression of the reality of war in Iraq over here, which is why Blair gets a well deserved metaphorical kick in the nuts everytime something bad happens in Iraq (and that goes for UK/US AND Iraqi casualties)

Andrew

You lot think you've got problems ????????

We have a champion player in the game of Follow The Leader, and just like you lot, we've voted him in for another term.

I cant help wondering when Australia will become an American state. The latest Americanism is that we no longer have end of school year breakup parties. They are now refered to as bloody PROMS !!!!!!!!!!!! :tapemouth :tapemouth

Now, don't misunderstand me. I like Yanks. I'm just concerned about OUR national identity.

Rick.

QUESTION:

Electoral votes are in porportion to population based on the most current censes, the more people the more votes (electoral, not popular) to the winner of the state.

But if only 40% of the people vote in a state, it still counts as 100% of the people voting.

Since we live in a democracy, rights come with responceabilities. I feel that states with poor voter turnout should have their electoral votes reduced.

Example: a state with 40 electoral votes and 50% voter turn out would be worth only 20 electoral votes to the winner in that state. A state with 15 electoral votes and 66% turnout would be worth 10 electoral votes to the winner.

The overall winner of the election would then be the canidate with the most e-votes, and would more represent the popular vote and encourage more PARTICIPATION in democracy.

Having the Presidency decided by a handfull of votes in a single state/ county just invites fraud.

But that's "Politics American Style". :stupid:

I certainly agree with your idea. It's pathetic to see how few eligible voters actually do vote. The turn out this time 'round was better than most recent elections, but the numbers were still too low for my taste. However, then you run into the problem of more uninformed fools who don't know their butt from beans showing up to vote.

I don't have an idea better than yours, though.

Thanks and good point MikeW! I think this is a great thread, but maybe it needs a new home since the comic relief breaks it up, and now there is not a place of respite!

Q: How many Senators does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

A: The committee has only been deliberating for three years, 6 months, 11 days and 5 hours. They have made 167 new jobs in the process, all of which will be gone when theis blue ribbon panel disbands after the answer has been agreed on. Do you really want to be responsable for the loss of those 167 jobs?

Q: But, Won't the jobs be lost when the administration changes anyway?

A: Hell no, by then the one bright bulb in this room will have burned out, the question(you remember it don't you?) still will not have been answered, but no one will know what to do without the answer, which really won't matter because most of us are very well paid for being completely in the dark anyway! (With 167 members away from congress, you really dont think they could carry a motion anyway-oop, we don't work there too-security!)
