hi all

have a problem

anybody else had this on their 240z l24 motor

drive for about two kilometres then the car dies

no spark to the plugs but spark to the distributor from the coil

when the car cools down for about an hour it will start again then go for another two ks and dies

any thoughts out there

thank you

Hey Rob,

If you are confident it's not the coil packing up, check the spring loaded carbon contact on the inside of your distributor cap that completes the cct to your rotor button, they do get shorter as they wear and may be sticking with temp. change? If you have the bits handy replace the coil to dizzy lead, then the dizzy cap, and if still no joy.. the rotor button.

Let us know how you go.

Jim.

P.S. Assuming conventional Kettering points ignition here!

I really suspect the coil...now LOL . I have had a situation where you can coax a spark while testing, but the coil couldn't give enough under the rigours of a combustion chamber, the symptoms were similar to what you have experienced... would run oK,short stop for any reason (say refuel) and no starting 'till things had cooled of considerably. Ended up changing the coil at a servo...it fixed it. I must say the symptoms could point to a crook condenser as well, but if you've already changed that item once?...I suppose ol' Murphy and his law could be having a go at you. Ahh the joys of points ignition, I guess there is only so many bits that can fail!

Jim.

Condenser is for excess spark, so when it shits itself the motor will still idle fine, but when revved will pop and fart like anything. In my mind it has to be the coil, or something weird going on inside the dizzy cap like water vaporising in it then having it arc to a hairline crack in the cap. I'd try another coil if you have one handy then go from there.

My bet is the condensor, I had a similar problem. Had spark when cranking, engine started then inexplicably would stop.

Puzzled a few until we looked at the condensor lead, the vaccum advance interferred and caused a open circuit when running [not].
