Has anyone used or seen a Z painted with Dupont Imron paint. From my reading there are one part and a two part (color and clear coat) versions of this paint. I've been told it is very tough, in fact it is even used on boats. I've also been told it buffs up very well. I'm interested in long term experience with this paint on the car. Thanks.

Back in the 1980's My dad had a couple of early Ford Mustangs painted using Imron. When applied correctly, the finish is spectacular. The big selling point of the paint was the fact you didn’t have to wax it as often and it was less prone to fading. Imron was also very tough. However, its toughness also meant that the paint didn’t have much give to it. A door ding often resulted in that section of paint chipping off your car. Also, I would highly suggest an external air supply versus just a respirator if you are applying it. When I was a teenager, I worked a summer at a body shop. I recall spraying Imron on some toy planes and rocket used for a carnival ride. I was wearing a mask, but the fumes still made me sick as a dog. Back then, I didn't know what OSHA was.

I think that was the turning point for me not to seek a career as a body and paint man.

Had my car painted with conventional paint. Drove around the neighborhood on race slicks and when I got back to my garage all the paint had been sandblasted off the front of my rear flairs.

Car went back to body shop and got "gravel gaurd" applied to flairs and re- painted with Deltron (2 part urethane similar to Imron) and clear coated. Later buffed out and it was spectacular!!!

Over the years I've had some yellowing (think caused by poor sealer), but I'm re-doing the body and it will be re-painted again soon.

I am in the process of painting with PPG's Deltron . I shot the epoxy ptimer sealer yesterday and the last of it today , and shot the base on the engine bay and under the hood and hatch today, will finish the base tomarrow as well as the clear. Really goes on nice and is great to work with .Vary strong smell and buy the best mask you can afford. I am using a filter mask and cant smell a thing but it is vary strong ,dont try and use a simple dust mask . This stuff is not cheep. Gary To answer the question about Imeron one thing I do remember is it took a long time to dry and cure . Like days plus it is toxic.

We finished he clear tonight and it turned out really great, One day I will post some pictures. I am vary pleased with the deltron. The secound coat of clear really made the difference. Just for numbers . We shot 2 qts of white epoxy primer/sealer 2 qts of Deltron base , in Screaming Yellow, and 2 qts of clear. And had plenty of each . we shot the engine bay and jambs . Shot the doors , hatch and hood off the car and the engine and trans is out as will. The interior and all the glass is out too. With reducers , activaters and hardners and all It came to $470.00 Plus the self etching primer and the hi-fill that was used in preping . Gary

bpilati, Imron is good stuff, so is same thing from different company (Deltron), your right to wear respirator because the two parts form a urethane plastic, don't want to inhale drolets and have them form plastic in your lungs, very tough-used on airplanes and race cars, doesn't chip (as much), door dings with or without chips still suck.

I painted my with Imron 20 years ago, still shiney and nice. A good buffing would probably make it look like new but it's time for a repaint this winter, after 20 years I'm ready for a different look!
