Posted April 17, 200222 yr comment_5702 To Z fans,Is it ok to use a 3.1 stroker (diesel crank) on a 280z turbo engine???Thanks,Cel:cool: Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/1392-31-diesel-crank/ Share on other sites
April 17, 200222 yr comment_5731 It will most likely work, but the main question is why? You already have a turbo, so why spend thousands (yep, that's what you'd be looking at) just for a little gain? You'd have to lighten, re-balance, polish the crank, then change pistons to get the compression back down so you don't blow the head off when the boost kicks in. All in all, with the labor involved and the cost, I don't think it would be a worthwhile investment. Better to stick with what you have and maybe invest in an intercooler, and perhaps see how you could turn up the boost a little. Sorry, but IMO it would be a waste of time and money, especially money. Just adding an intercooler (if you don't have one already that is) would boost your performance as much as the stroker crank. April 17, 200222 yr comment_5734 I'm going to have to go with 2MANYZS on this one. Way too expensive. A local guy here in the Oklahoma Z club tried it and ended up sprending $8k on the engine. I would stay where you are at. Besides, if it works, why mess with success. From what I understand, in addition to what is already mentioned, you would need different pistons, bolts, a major change in your valvetrain geometry, etc. Then you have to consider boring, microflux to make certain the block will take it. You mentioned a 280Z block, which block is it? F54 turbo block is the block of choice for stroker applications. I would reconsider but its your call. April 17, 200222 yr comment_5737 When building an L28 stroker with the aforementioned diesel crank how is the L28T block better than any other L28 block - what is it about it that makes it better? Better cooling passageways? More ribbing in the casting for improved strength?-e Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/1392-31-diesel-crank/#findComment-5737 Share on other sites
April 30, 200222 yr comment_6423 Im onboard with everyone else in here--I will note that the diesel crank weights about 5 tons more than the stock L28 and requires lightening and all that fun stuff before its even worth using in a turbo motor...if you did use it, you'd have a torquier car but the rev limits would ultimately be lower and this and that. blah blah blah---Id go with more boost, cooler air, more fuel and better spark timing to make life fun than d*** around with a smelly old diesel crank.:tapemouth Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/1392-31-diesel-crank/#findComment-6423 Share on other sites
April 30, 200222 yr comment_6429 Yeah I forgot to mention the blah, blah, blah. How silly of me. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/1392-31-diesel-crank/#findComment-6429 Share on other sites
