Dans240z Posted November 22, 2004 Share #1 Posted November 22, 2004 I was doing some reading the other day and was reading about different heads. I saw that the most of the 240z's used E88s and the early ones used the rare E31. Well, I got a bunch of heads when I recently bought my second 240, and I thought I should check out some in my garage. What do ya know! One is an E31! Is this head worth replacing the E88 on a stock 240z?Ps: How do I know if I need a cam oiler?
Gav240z Posted November 22, 2004 Share #2 Posted November 22, 2004 It's not worth replacing to be honest. The early 72 E88's at least in Australia were identical and even in 73 it was only the carbs that changed on the 73.I think the compression ratio dropped slightly but not much to notice. If you have put bigger valves in or done any port work to the E88 it's much better to stick with it.To be honest the E31 isn't all that rare either i'm sure you can still find them on Ebay. If you open the valve cover up you can see the cam oiler bar running along the length of the cam if it's an internally oiling cam you can see the holes in the cam lobes.Gavin. Bambikiller240 Posted November 22, 2004 Share #4 Posted November 22, 2004 Datsun/Nissan OEM cams for ALL North American Market 240Z's require the cam oiler bar. There are 2 different E88 heads, The Early E88 has the same combustion chamber design as the E31. The late E88 head has a lower compression design. As stated earlier, IF you have had work done to the head currently on your car, I'd keep it. However, if you haven't had work done, I'd consider changing it to the E31 (or the Early E88) at some convenient time.FWIW, the FSM's indicates:72 240Z - 9.0 : 1 Compression Ratio73 240Z - 8.8 : 1 " "
Gav240z Posted November 22, 2004 Share #5 Posted November 22, 2004 ...sounds like someone doesn't have an E31! (just kidding!) Your right i don't have an E31 . However I do have the P90  . IMO the best head for the Zed . Unless you go twin cam or cross flow then it's a different story all together :cheeky: .
Dans240z Posted November 22, 2004 Author Share #6 Posted November 22, 2004 Hey thanks,The cam oiler is not for a 240z engine, it is for an L28 with an N42 head, but I think I understand. There are no holes in the rebello cam that the N42 has.
Gav240z Posted November 22, 2004 Share #7 Posted November 22, 2004 Oh really I would have thought they changed it to internally but then again if the cam was designed for an E31 would make sense less stuffing about and most agree it makes no difference. I just prefer internally as a matter of opinion in my head it seems to work better but hey that's just me. Yes the N42 would have the holes as you say.
