Fix for Slow Wipers

If Left one works and Right one doesn't, it almost has to be that the one not operating is disconnected somehow from the motor. The motor "drives" the Driverside (LEFT) wiper via the main Operating Rod, and a Slave Operating Rod "drives" the Passengerside (RIGHT) from the Driverside Pivot. I would bet the Slave Operating Rod is either missing or disconnected from the Driverside Pivot. To make any repair, you'll have to remove the system from the car. Virtually no parts are available from dealer, so whatever is broken or missing is going to need to be found at a JY, or the "parts car" you just got rid of.

hi guys,

old thread but i just got round to this tonight and i noticed that my motors are differant to yours. instead of the plate the wires go into a little box with a Z printed on it. does anyone know what this is and how i go about changing park with it? also does anyone know where i can get a new bag from? mine was and is now totally destroyed.

*EDIT* also where is the auto-relay? the service manual says to clean these contacts but it doesnt have a picture.

I'll have to go look at my Spare wiper motor tomorrow, but if you turn the motor over, doesn't that side of YOUR motor have the cover with the marks radially around it?

EDIT: Wait, I'm mixed up, the other side would have the stud for output of hte wiper motor.

My description and pictures are of a Wiper Motor from a 11/71 mfg'd 240Z. If your car is a 77 260Z, perhaps the Wiper motor mechanism has been redesigned and doesn't need a manual adjustment for the "Park" posistion of the wipers. Otherwise, your motor looks very similar to mine.

The motor in your picture is the one with the relay for the intermittent wiper option.

That little Z box is the relay that allows the intermittent function. If I vaguely recall, these came from the factory already preset with the park function, and the only way to change it was to open the gearbox (that big round piece behind the Z box in your picture) and physically moving the gear over a notch or two with regards to the worm gear. That is, open cover, lift round gear (which is attached to shaft) and then rotate it only one tooth or two of the round gear. I don't recall if the spiral of the worm gear makes contact on every tooth or if it skips one (i.e. the round moves 2 teeth per "tooth" of the worm).

I may be completely off base on this one as it has been literally a couple of decades since I dealt with one.

The adjustment that Carl is referring to is on the earlier non-intermittent wiper motors. These had a physical switch which came through the back of the gear box and kept a pair of reed contacts open as long as it wasn't parked. By rotating the housing which held them in place, you would change at what position in the rotation the switch closed.

As far as a moisture bag, any of the different year bags should work.

Are you able to figure this one out. When I put my wipers on they work for the full, correct arc for about the first half dozen strokes, then the drivers side seems to do a longer arc, so long it flips out past the windshield rubber. Turn them off, they return to park. Turn them on and the same thing happens, ie work correctly for about 6 strokes then the drivers side runs long in its arc.

Any ideas? It bugs the hell out of me.

Hi Joseph:

The only thing I can think of is that possibly the connector that connects to the output shaft of the motor and then attaches to the Operating rods might be damaged in some way. This connector is made up of about 9 parts including the Main Operating Rod. On one of the mechanisms that I got from Parts cars, the spring in this assembly had the "locating tang" worn off so that the spring could not be locked into a fixed position. I'm thinking that it's possible that this would cause something similar to what you describe. Unfortuately, the only way to examine this part of the Operating Mechanism is to remove the entire system from the car and disassemble the connector.

I'm attaching some picture that I took while disassembling and assembling my connectors. NOTE: Please keep in mind tha these pictures depict an HLS30 (Left Hand Drive S30) Wiper System.
