New disty for '77...

I am guessing the vast majority on this site are carbies, and probably a fair chunk of you do not have EI...BUT...since this is a very cool site and will soon be THE place for 1st gen's to hang out, I will ask anyhoo...

Car runs really really good. Sent it in for a valve adjustment and general systems going-over (there are some things I don't do!) and mech says vacuum advance is not operating. Is this why it won't pull below 3000? So I start checking around...Here's the question:

I think this might be a good time to change the whole disty. I don't want to create any problems though. I want something designed for the car. Something that requires NO modification to the factory EFI or EI systems. Something that will operate flawlessly with both the factory setup or a 6A and hot coil. Basically I don't want any bugs. I know there are several available. Any suggestions? Pros or cons?

IMO I think you might want to either stay with what you have or update to a Zx dist. with the 12-80. It would be cheaper in the long run to just go with a new stock dist. and update to an MSD later on. You would need to get the magnetic trigger adapter to go with the MSD so it will fire the injectors. Nothing really wrong with the stock dist. except that your vacuum advance is supposedly not working. Actually, if the vacuum advance is n't working it should have more effect on the higher RPM's and not under 3K.

Here goes the new guy arguing but...lmao j/k so the advance isnt working, the problem is, it could be stuck in either direction, so its not fair to say what rpm range it would impact, but either which way, no advance would blow!!!

Id just rebuild the stock unit and go on..its super simple, usually a matter of just changing out the diaphragm unit, takes no time at all.

I doubt its "stuck" per say, probably just old diaphragm (damn that words hard to spell-hmm) thats blown out, or lost resilency
