Voltage Regulator on the fritz?

If you are not a stickler for originality you could replace the VR with a new solid state (transistor) unit one and never have VR roblems again. I did with my first Z all those years ago.

Sorry to resurect an old thread, but where do you guys find the solid state reg? Is it plug n play?

I have a new ER alt on the car and am having the same problem as above. I don't care if it's not a factory look so i'd like to replace the VR with a solid state one.

Thanks,

Jay

So i just walk un and say i'd like a solid state regulator? Is their a year/type of car it comes from?

The parts stores near me are run by a bunch of kids that don't know squat. So i'd like to know what to say for sure.

Thanks,

Jay

Of course a good/tight belt first. The next place I would go is the car wiring harness to volt reg. connector. A close inspection is required. The connectors attach but not all the pins make contact across. Until the problem returns yours is fine. So a belt check and a inspection/cleaning would be my start.

Years ago, i took my first z to a auto eletrician, they said the vr wasnt working. the came back with a shiny new transistor type one and replaced it. The old VR's are mechanical.

I'm sure they'd have a book from the makers of replacement VR's manufacturers listing what cars the VR's would go in. You tell them what car you have and she should be able to look it up. If the dont know, go somewhere else.

ALWAYS REPLACE THE V.R. whenever you replace or have had problems with the alternator. Its almost one of those Datsun "rule of thumbs"

I have to agree on this. Almost every time my Z's have had problems with Alternator, OR Voltage Regulator; I have ended up having to replace the other component as well.

Also, I've known people to be disatisfied with the "modern" (solid state) VR's. Some have even ended up searching salvage yards for a used original VR to replace the newly purhcased "modern" one that they thought would be the answer to all of their problems.

if the VR goes bad, it has the potential to kill the alternator and possible make the battery explode. if you suspect a problem with either piece, i recommend from my own experience to replace both, as stated above.

however, i have been quite satisfied with my solid state VR, but i still have my original just in case ;)
