I had a white 71 240Z in the garage. It was in need of some work, but my dad and I were going to resotre it together. However, My parents decided that the car would be too risky for a young driver, I am 16, and I had to give it up. :sleepy:

I am now looking at maybe getting a 300 ZX, but the 240 cant get out of my mind.

I hope to someday get one, and complete that dream I had.

Please consider getting a 240~280 S30 instead. In truth 300 ZX parts are quite costly. you can easily spend $20K bringing a 90-96 back up to spec. Why not spend that money on your dream? We'll help you look! This crowd loves to buy cars vicariously!

What a wonderful response.... Let us hope 5 Speed takes your advice to heart.....

5 Speed, explain to your parents that an early Z is also an investment. Why would a 240Z be more risky than a 300ZX? I'd think it would be the other way around, especially for a 16 year old. Keep your dream of getting a early Z alive. Let your Dad drive one, Z fever is very easy to catch. That might help your dream come true.

5 Speed. I have a very rusty 72. My mother wants my dad to sell it she thinks its to fast for me. But everytime they start talking about it i just hand dad the keys. He comes back with a big grin on his face and says the car is staying here.

Thanks for the advice guys, I am not giving up the dream.

The main problem is that my dad has driven the car, and he loved it just as much as I did. It was almost as hard for him to give it up as for me. The main problem that they had with the car is the safety aspects, and the availabilty of the parts. We went with the Z to an auto mechanic who really knew the car, he had 3 240's alone. Mine needed air conditioning and some fixing up on the brakes. He was talking about a month to get the parts in stock, and that wasent good with my parents.

The idea of the car getting stolen was also a heavy factor. I would be putting it on college campuses, which arent the greatest. The car would have been pretty nice, and a good target to get stolen, espically on the campuses.

Also what if it breaks down? Don't I pretty much have to take it too a speciality shop? There are some in my area (Orange County, CA) but what about in different places, espically where I go to college.

My Dad was the owner of an old Datsun Roadster, and It was just as hard for him to give up the Z.

There is the problem, but thanks for the help. I hope to get a 240 after college. For me that is the current plan.

The 300ZX is just a longing for a Z after the 240, that is all. The car does look alright, but insurance for a young driver on a late model would most likely be a problem, so I am kinda in a deadlock.

But, once again thanks for the advice, I will keep going for that 240

It shouldnt brake down. Thease cars arnt junk, they are actaully reliable.

And they are a hell of alot easier then working on new cars .

I could be wrong, but the car is over 30 years old. New it probably was quite relaible. But time has its toll, and the technology has gotten so much better over the years. My parents want me to have a car that I can depend on, a start every time car.

Mark, for gawd's sake, put the 71 Z in storage or something. Get another car somehow to fulfill your mom's wishes, but don't part with the Z. Trust me, if you get rid of it now you will be kicking yourself in the :tapemouth later on!!! You may not be able to even find a 71 Z in the years ahead. Just some experience talking!

Take it from someone who has given up TWO early 240Zs (70 & 72) AND a Datsun Roadster. KEEP THE Z! I also had two 510s but I don't miss them nearly as much. If your Z is in good workable condition, it can be made to be reliable. I depend on my 79 810 Coupe on a daily basis and my 280Z always starts and runs whenever I call on it. I know they're newer than your car but they're still over 25 years old. They can be dependable.

Ditto, I drove a 72 daily for 7 years. In Nebraska!! In winter!! And I drove a 71 for almost 10 years daily.

Dependability has never been a issue with ANY Z I've owned.

Yeah, I will agree today is the saddest day.

Waking up to hear that Dimebag Darrell isn't gracing us with his guitar anymore was really crappy.

The fact that it happened 15 min from the house really pisses me off.
