Recommendations on newer ignition and plugs

I picked up the distributor for $45 at the local yard. The blaster 2 coil was givin to me by a friend. I am bidding on an MSD 6A on ebay and if I'm lucky it won't cost me more than $60-$70 bucks for a grand total of $45 + $70 = $135

You can't beat that for a Newish ignition system that gives me more power and better gas milage and performance.

Yes the ZX dizzy! I run one as well. The goods - never needs adjustment, Full 12 volts (trash the ballast resistor!), and superior spark! Be sure to grab the coil from the junk yard with the dizzy. better yet, buy a new dizzy and coil. A worn out ZX dizzy will be worse than a new points style.

zondabrain , has it right for my money. The NGK plugs have worked the best in these engines for me and most of us. The ZX ignition is all that he says it is . My BPR6ES NGK plugs cost me $10.14 for the set and I have been running them so long I had to look in by log book to see what I paid for them . This set up has worked great for me . It isn't the price it's the results. If this was a Jag or a Honda , thats another story. my 2c

I found this guide on how to rebuild the 280ZX dizzy, it seems to be a good resourse, I thought it might be helpful to others with my inquiry. I would think that rebuilding one from the junker would be the best and cheapest way to go, the guy also custom makes replacement bushings, its interesting... Dizzy Rebuilding

Actually, the 77 280Z stock ignition is pretty decent.

For the most part the OEM parts are better than any aftermarket parts (except maybe an MSD). Even the stock coil is quite good. The only OEM upgrade I would do is the D6K8 distributor w/ E12-80 ign. module. This module has more output current capability, and the D6K8 distributor has a better advance curve.

I've measured 165HP and 175ft/lbs at the wheels of the track 240Z I built an engine for. The ignition system is all OEM parts. I think spending a lot on an MSD with a stock engine is a waste of money. I think just upgrading to better OEM parts is easier, and the performance is just as good. I may put an MSD on this car just to see if there is any difference. Details are below:

Ignition:

BPR6ES NGK plugs

NGK wires

280Zx coil (used)

Nissan cap and rotor (used)

D6K8 distributor w/ E12-80 ign. module (used)

Timming set to 28 deg max advance

Engine:

F54 block - flattops (rebuilt, std bore)

N47 Head - stock cam, no port work, intake manifold and header port matched

6:1 header, 2.5" exhaust with supertrapp

60mm throttle body

Megasquirt EFI
