Posted December 11, 200420 yr comment_104834 ay, just finnished converting my 260 to round tops, still need some stuff, but I found this which gives a real good feel for the carb, maybe should go in tech articles. Not sure if its already here, but thought it might help anyone messing with the carbs. http://www.zparts.com/zptech/articles/mal_land/ml_sucarb2/images4/SUcarb_111601d.htm Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/14287-good-article-on-sus/ Share on other sites
December 11, 200420 yr comment_104836 Definatly worth the read for anyone that plans on doing any work to their SU's. Great find!Information that really startled me was where it said that later model Zeds (260 - 280) should not run unleaded fuelJustin Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/14287-good-article-on-sus/#findComment-104836 Share on other sites
December 11, 200420 yr comment_104848 On the unleaded fuel issue, I have the feeling that the author doesn't live in North America. The cars that were sold in the U.S., (and I think Canada...) after 1975 came from the factory with a catalitic converter, and thus had the hardened intake seats installed. (Leaded gas plugs converters in only a few thousand miles of operation.)Leaded gasoline has not been legal for street use in the U.S. for nearly 20 years. December 12, 200420 yr comment_104863 Pay spicific attention to the oil issue and how the damper works and that thin oil causes a LEAN mixture . ATF is only 5w . 20w is is recommended . This is a great post and one to download and keep . Thanks for the post. December 12, 200420 yr comment_104869 After reading this I've just made the switch from a sewing machine oil in the dashpot, to the mix that he describes... It's like a whole new bloody car! Hello throttle response! Very happy here. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/14287-good-article-on-sus/#findComment-104869 Share on other sites
December 12, 200420 yr comment_104880 Great info, but where do I find 20w oil without mixing? Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/14287-good-article-on-sus/#findComment-104880 Share on other sites
December 12, 200420 yr comment_104889 I am told that Motorcycle shops carry 20 wt "fork oil". You can also order 20 wt oil in small (very small) bottles from MSA. Probably much cheaper at the M.C. shop than at MSA. December 13, 200420 yr comment_105018 So if you have a 72 you should be running leaded fuel? How can we do that? Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/14287-good-article-on-sus/#findComment-105018 Share on other sites
December 18, 200420 yr Author comment_105422 hey, glad yas liked the article. I finnished the carb conversion on the cali car and had a drive of her today. Much much better than the flat tops, in terms of driveability, performance marginal, hopefully some tuning she'll get better. Also with the oil issue, I heard that auto trans fluid, will work good too.
