Rebuilt Trannies for Sale

To your knowledge does anyone sell rebuilt trannies for our Zs?

I lost fifth all of a sudden without any notice on the freeway this AM, but did make it to work in 4th just fine, 1/2/3 whine due to what I believe to be one of their shaft bearings having spun itself... Basically this one's had it...

Yeah I could go and get another tranny from the junkyard but who's to say how many XXXXXX miles it will have and how long it will last...

I could give my tranny to someone to have it rebuilt but that means I'd be dead in the water for a while... that's why I wonder if there still exists someone that sells them outright? Any clues?

Thanks,

-e

I called the guys at drivetrain.com and here's what they said...

a full rebuild (bearings, synchros, seals) is $680.- & takes approx 5business days

an outright 280Z or 280ZX 5spd (apparently it doesn't matter to them) is $1000.- +$250 core charge.

Shipping from their Vegas warehouse to LA is about $60.-

What do you all think?

The local junkyard sells trannies for $150 if I remember correctly...

I think you're money ahead to have a tranny gone thru like on the exchange deal sited above. These cars and the compnents are not getting any younger and the time comes to bite the bullet and start refreshing components so you know where you are. Now having said that who knows a good rear end set up guy?

I dropped of my R180 LSD last year at a great place in Anaheim (CA) and wanted to call them this AM to see if they did trannies too - unfortunately I don't have their contact info with me right now at work... I'll look it up tonight and post it here for you, ok?

Hey TexasZ, what did Cottman's charge you?

We don't have them here to my knowledge... I wonder if it's worth shipping mine to TX instead of LasVegas... That's why I'd like to know what they charged and what they did...

Thanks,

when fifth gear goes all of a sudden it can be the backing off of a bolt inside the tranny, my 510 had a Z box, and it dropped fifth for no reason, pulled it an had it looked at, guy said it was a main nut backing off over time causing the cogs to move out of whack, 50 bucks later and it was good to go.

wow $10.50 for that 4 speed. I am shocked. I would have taken it for more than that. I wish I hadn't neglected to watch it

I wish you had watched it, I could have made a little more money and even delivered it to you. The buyer may flake out, he doesn't sound very convincing yet about coming to get it...he's NW of DFW.

They charged me $150 but didn't really have to do anything except pull it apart to make sure there were no problems then put it all back together with all new seals. It was worth it to me to know that this is a solid tranny and I should have no problems after I install it...I don't want to have to pull it back out again.
