Rebuilt Trannies for Sale

when fifth gear goes all of a sudden it can be the backing off of a bolt inside the tranny, my 510 had a Z box, and it dropped fifth for no reason, pulled it an had it looked at, guy said it was a main nut backing off over time causing the cogs to move out of whack, 50 bucks later and it was good to go.

He knew what he was talking about. Good find of a good mechanic. Yea, it loosens and backs off, giving you a fith-gear-neutral, but not for long. Continue driving and the main shaft falls apart - Not Recommended!

You got it fixed at the right time, by the right person, it sounds to me.

I think you're money ahead to have a tranny gone thru like on the exchange deal sited above. These cars and the compnents are not getting any younger and the time comes to bite the bullet and start refreshing components so you know where you are. Now having said that who knows a good rear end set up guy?

Hi Bruce.

Do you or Bill or Steve know of anyone in Salem who can rebuild a 280Z 5-speed to take some abuse? I'm losing my synchro in 3rd to the point where double-clutching is the only way to stop the grinding.

Thanks,

Phill

p.s. Hows the wagon?

Eric - I'm over on the right coast, so shipping becomes a factor, but I wanted to say that the price you were quoted ($600-700./1-yr warranty) is what I pay to have a tranny professionally gone through. The guy I use is an ex-circle track driver and he does the work on our club race car too. The good news is that all the parts are still available. A reasonable price for a used junkyard tranny is in the $150-250 range, plus your rebuild costs.

I lost 5th gear on a 1000 trip and did over 500 miles in 4th, with vettes and porsches wanting to play as I drove home. I couldn't remember the universal hand-sign for "bad tranny".

Well, I was going to point downward and then make a crooked finger, but I figured they would have thought that I was asking for some viagra. I ended up making a small sign during a gas/pit stop and using that the next time. I could have taken the boxster (okay after 125 I would have been looking at his exhaust pipe).....

Hey, this is a good thread - I have a 5-speed in my 240Z that I want to replace with a parted out 4-speed. The 4-speed is in my possession, but I want it rebuilt prior to dropping the 5-speed.

I am in NJ - want to avoid shipping, so if there are any East Coast recommendations - that would be appreciated.
