Shifter Thread Issue

Hey all, I was wondering if anyone had a solution to the problem i found with my shifter. I see that most all newer shift knobs are made for a 12mm x 1.75 or 10mm x 1.50 . I bought my brother a Nismo knob and it doesn't fit on his 260 with a type 1 5 speed. I have read that the early z up to the 300zx were 8mm x 1.25 , does anyone know of a company or a place to buy the reducer kits for the knobs? I see most knobs come with reducers for 10mm only. I found a place that will make custom threaded reducers but before I went that far I was hoping someone had a answer to the prob . Thanks

It sounds like you have done some homework! I would say, unless you have the tools and skills to fabricate one yourself, go with the guy who will custom make one for you. While your at it, maybe ask people here if they are interested in one of these thread reducers for their shifter. I don't know of anyone who sales a unit like you describe, but maybe someone here can help out with a contact. Good luck.

I just talked to the " sales lady " and they say they don't sell to the public , go figure, think I might have to start searching plumbing places , if I resolve the problem I will let you know , I bet you are right some people might be interested. OK will keep you posted

Anyone know what tap size you use for a M8 heli-coil? If it's M10, then there might be your answer.

Thread the helicoil into the shift knob, then thread that arse'y onto the shifter.

Note: I have never used heli-coils before, and therefore am only providing a suggestion

I have used (with success) the thread repair epoxy, where you mix a 2-part epoxy glue, pour into the 'damaged threads' (in this case, your shifter knob), coat the proper bolt with a release agent, and let cure. When cured, remove bolt and threads are 'created'.

The only other candidate I can think of are thread-serts, similar to a threaded pop rivet, and bind it into the knob.
