72 240Z Coil Problems?

1972 240Z with fresh rebuilt engine, new distributor, cap, rotor, etc....

Car was driving absolutley fine, until it just died at an intersection. Gas tank is full, battery is new, starter cranks freely, carbs are filling the air with the smell of gas as I try to start the car. My guess is no spark, when i hold the lead wire from the coil to a ground, I dont see a spark.

I replaced the coil, and condensor on the distributor with no luck! I just purchased a new ballast resistor for the ingnition coil, and spark plug wires for the hell of it... however the car is like 50 miles away so I want to make sure I cover all the bases before I drive out to fix it, any advice?? what to look for? Also a wiring diagram for the coil to distributor would be excellent, just in case something was hooked up backwards, or became loose, and I mixed them up.

One more thing! The resistor on the gound for the coil, which is just for the radio so there is no noise, I was told I could just cut that off and ground it solid, I have no radio.

Thanks

Dave.

Had the exact same problem, Mine was a coil problem, Sounds like you covered that. Ballast would be next. If you have a volt meter bring it. Check for 12v at coil with ignition on. No v there work your way back. Could be ignition switch. Is Distributor rotating? Bring a long jumper wire. If its the ignition switch, You can "hot wire" it home.

Hope it helps good luck!

Well, now I have replaced the condensor, and balast, coil, plug wires, plugs, everything!! I have checked the points, they open and close and the gap is spot on... Where to go from here?? There isnt a fuse for the ignition! Is there some kind of a relay that may have gone bad, where would that be?? Im at a total loss here right now! meanwhile the car is sitting miles and miles away from home, and i drive over an hour each way just to work on it, or troubleshoot... the engine turns no problem! and everything mechanical is in excellent condition.

thanks.

Dave
