Carbon parts (post suggestions)

I've been talking to a guy who makes carbon fiber and fiberglass - whatever

you want basicly. I'm gonna have him make the center console in carbon to

start with. But I don't think it's gonna stop there. When he mentioned hoods

he's made that weigh 1.5 Kilograms, how could I not be tempted?

Anyway - the parts I have in mind (maybe) getting are these:

Hood

Doors

Rear hatch

Front fenders

Wishbones (either Carbon or Chrome Moly)

Front/rear spoiler + side skirts

Do you have any suggestions/interests on/in other parts? Once the molds

have been made it wouldn't be entirely impossible to make some more for

you guys. Not sure of pricing yet - but probably a bunch cheaper than the

prices I've seen - like US$1300 for a pair of cr-mo wishbones or US$1200

for a hood, etc.

So, if you're interested - let me know what you're interested in.

My car is a '71 240z and that's what the molds will be made from...

The process is somewhat of a secret, but the result is a lot like pre-preg

carbon - light and tough. A layer of kevlar is also included to prevent the

carbon from shattering if you're in an accident.

Hi Mull

How about ZG flairs, rear tail light panels or the panel that covers the windshield wiper motor. I would be interested in ZG flairs.

Cheers, Ari

Good idea - I completely forgot about the cover for the viper motors!

I haven't got any ZG-flares, sorry - can't make a mold unless I have

whatever needs molding handy :stupid: :)

Rear tail light panels - don't think they would be any problem...

I have the stock euro (or was is US?) wing mounted on my hatch, so

that might be of interest as well (for me anyways) :)

You know, Spirit Garage has the hatch, cowl (windshield wiper cover, but it is only for right hand drive S30's), and hood. PDK Fabrications has made a carbon fiber dashboard, but you can't use the climate controls. Would really be a nice touch for the daily driver.....if you could use the climate controls.

I will have to look up the website for most of this stuff, but it is out there.

PDK has just completed and installation of their fiberglass dash with heater controls etc. So it can be done, however the dash is a RACE PART and requires a large amount of fabrication in order for it to work for this application.

I know. However, I'm not paying those amounts of money when I have a sponsor that can fix it cheaper.

from PDK website: "That's a 40lb savings"

I weighed my stock dash ('71 240z) and it weighed in at about 28.6 lb...

How did you calculate the 40 lb saving?

That weight calculation was an aproximate value including heater and instruments. Which would add up to over 40 lbs.

I would suggest that you stick to making parts that are not currently manufactured...hoods, hatches tail light panels and ZG flares out of CF are already available through several sources.

Hi Guys - there is a guy on HybridZ called Vince already doing these parts, I have some on order. His game plan is to take deposits in advance, make the components and ship them, that way he can keep costs down by doing a run of 20 or 30 pieces at a time.

If you are interested, search for Carbon and you will find the thread.

Cheers

Andy
