Anyone know what material the Hitachi SU insulators that go between the carb and intake are made of? What is the primary purpose of those things anyway? Just a spacer or is there some sort of vibration isolation involved? Also I need to make a custom set of those. What material should I use to make new ones that most machine shops should be able to work with? Would Delrin work - or aluminum? Thanks for the help

From memory they are to help cut down the vibrations. I wouldn't go for solid mounts. I've seen a thread somewhere about it....have you done a search?

I believe theya re also meant to space the carbs away & insulate the carbs from direct transfer of engine heat.

I'm not familiar with all of Delrin's properties, but if it can stand the heat near the engine, I think it would work fine.

One question though, Why do you have to make them, aren't they still available for SU's?

mperdue, I believe that the material is a phenolic plastic (paper and resin) similar to what might be used on pots and pans handles. Check with a speciality lumberyard (exotic woods , etc), or an industrial suppy house, or electric motor rebuilders.

The isolators are solid mounts, but they isolate heat conduction to the carb.

Thanks for the help guys. I did do a search and didn't find what I was looking for. The reason I'm building a set is to adapt my Z carbs to a manifold for my 210. It needs a 46mm to 38mm conical hole so there's not an abrupt step between the carb and the manifold. I'll check out that plastic and also check the properties of Delrin to see which would be best.
