Ashtray and lid

Does anybody know where I can find a cover and metal ashtray 'snuffer' (metal piece you crush cigarettes out on) for a '71 tray in front of the shift console without coughing up the appropriate lung for an ebay original part?

I can't find these anywhere, and with the high probability for breakage for this part, I can't believe someone hasn't come up with a replacement aftermarket part. I also have a console from I believe a late '71-'72 (silver slide ashtray behind the shift) but I'd really like to keep my '71 as stock as possible. I was even looking to fabricate the part and see if I could get some company to manufacture them since they seem to be in such short supply, but it's hard to even find the part in the first place.

I looked for a long time until I bought a cracked & glued one on e-bay for only ½ a lung.

Just bought an unbroken (I hope) but incomplete unit also on e-bay, for another ¼ lung.

I may be willing to part with the main, cracked & glued part after I’m done making one good complete unit. It would at least make an example to build from.

I would really like to find the original from my car (probably in a previous owners garage with the steering wheel)!

So that's where those ashtrays that were missing their lids on eBay disappeared to. I bought mine on eBay awhile back and had to fix the hinge part on one side of the lid. Glued on small washers and painted them black. Doesn't have a spring, but looks original enough and is tight enough that lid stays up when I want it to. Makes a good coin tray.

mlc240Z, are the snufters from the later models a lot different than the early Series I snufters. I've never checked if they were interchangable (or adaptable) to each other. Just thinking out loud.

Is this being cruel? The only glue I have found that will work on repairing ash trays is "SuperGlue". Ash trays have indeed risen in value over the last year or so. Yes, the series one snufter is quite different. Actually, there are three different variants of the original snufter. I saw a new one on eBay not too long ago. And before you ask, this is an old photo. No, I don't have any.

Not sure if they changed among 70-71, but it's only a little 'L' shaped piece of chrome attached by screws from the outside of the tray. I don't have the ashtray base for the later console to compare, just the console and the sliding cover. I think I am going to fabricate the snuffer from sheet metal and make an attempt at the cover, after I go thru all the other 'little' things an old Z demands.

I would really like to find a replacement for my car as well. From the time I had looked at and bought the car to the time I picked it up (3 days), someone decided to snag the original ashtray, radio, horn pad and owners manual from my car. Over a year later and I am still as heated as I was then.

Yes, 26th you are being cruel . I look for these ashtrays everytime I see a Series I or early 71 with the console with the ashtray in front of the shifter at the wreckers. I've only found one car locally with that console, but of course the ashtray was gone. I did, however, get the nice verticle line defroster hatch glass (and the console) from it. I don't mind trying to make my own lid and that's why I was bidding on the lidless ashtrays that have been appearing on eBay lately. But with Christmas coming and the money they are going for I've so far resisted getting into a bidding war for an incomplete part. I just figure I need an extra ashtray as a back-up. Two extra ashtrays and I'd probably sell one of the extra Series I consoles I have (adding the ashtray) and make some real money to buy parts I don't have spares or replacements for. Gary

I did a blurb on ash trays a year or so ago. It's in the archives somewhere. Early ash trays came in black plastic with hollow handles and solid handles. They also came in grey plastic painted black. The little L shape chromed piece that mlc240Z talks about could very well be the tab with the grill broken off. I would be interested in seeing a picture. 26 didn't have a chrome grill inside - just a little L piece. I'm wondering. 27 has the chrome grill...err...rusted chrome grill. They both have grey plastic painted black a peculiarity of the early cars. I was able to find ash trays easily a year or so ago for around $25. Then they jumped to $75 minimum and I sold my spares. Should have held on to them, huh? I think the new one in my pictures above went for $250. Consoles have done the same thing in price, and now the choke plates have gone thru the roof. I am looking for the filler plug on the choke plate that fills the defroster switch cutout. Every console has the plug for the driving light / parking light switches, but I want one that fills the defroster switch as the babes don't have rear hatch defroster glass. Another peculiarity of the early cars.

Does anyone have a good picture of the spring in one of these ash trays which holds the lid up. Mine is missing and Im looking around for options.

Can I ask you if you have come to any conclusion regarding the 'missing' HRW ( defroster ) in the earliest of the HLS30U models?

You have in your post above noted the blanking plugs for the driving light & parking light switches. I suppose the driving / fog lights were always intended as 'Option' parts ( at least in most markets ) and the parking light switches were a Japanese-market necessity, but what about the HRW?

As you know, this was 'standard' equipment on the S30 and PS30 models, and an extra-cost 'option' on the S30S. Since the time you told me that your car had the clear ( non-HRW ) hatch glass, I have been wondering if this was a case of a cost-cutting decision on the spec of the HLS30U model that was very quickly reversed.

If all the early cars didn't have the HRW then I could understand the earliest of the HLS30Us not having them too ( due, for example, to something like holdups in supply ) but considering that the S30 and PS30 models were quite clearly fitted with them ( even at the Press preview event in October 1969 ) I wondered if you would agree that the HRW might have initially been left off of the spec for the HLS30U?

The HLS30U model at the Press preview event was quite clearly not fitted with the HRW, whilst the S30 and PS30 at the same event were. The blue HLS30U on the Nissan show stand at the Tokyo Auto Show ( labelled as a "Fairlady Z Export Model" ) was not fitted with the HRW, whilst the S30 and PS30 also on the show stand were.
