What tranny might I have?

I confess that I've not climbed under my '71 240Z to look at the rear of the transmission which might give an indication of what I have. The car is bone stock but there is a 5 speed transmission. Having only driven a '82 Nissan truck there is nothing I can compare it to. The cars pull smoothly through all gears with no noticable dispartity between any gear. I've driven a lot of 4 & 5 speeds and know about large jumps between gears such as in my NV4500 truck tranny.The console also has a small metal plate affixed with two screws showing the shift gate pattern. It appears to be quite old and original. The only noticable problem is engaging 1st gear. It requires being stopped and pulling the shifter into 2nd gear then slipping into 1st. The prior owner feels the tranny might have been a transplant from a late 60's/early seventies sedan? I know 5 speeds were available in the Euro market at the time so maybe one of these trannies made it to the states for the conversion?

The only noticable problem is engaging 1st gear. It requires being stopped and pulling the shifter into 2nd gear then slipping into 1st.

Take some slack out of the clutch rod and this might clear up. Sound like you got the FS5C71A transmission used in the Non-US market Z cars (long Tail), All of the SR roadsters (short tail) and the C10, and C110 Skylines. there are visable differences in the shifter arrangment on the transmission. Very very interesting. If my calculations are correct, it appears my 260 has the "Nismo Rally" direct drive box. It's the only one that fits the ratios I calculated....and I have a few suspision that my car was formerly used as a rally car.

Any one know if it'd be worth some money? It's comming out soon as it is pretty tired. Pops out of 2nd and 5th and the input shaft bearing seems to be fairly shagged.

If it's a 5 speed with 5th being direct, then you could have either a Nissmo box or a Holinger conversion.

Unfortunatly, your in Townsville and any cartage costs would negate the cost of the box heading down south........

Yeah sucks that I'm so far away here.

It's a standard 5sp H shift pattern, not dogleg. You never know I might have totally screwed my calculations, however at the time I did double check them. Some time soon I'll be swapping in a good 260Z box, so then I'll have a chance to see exactly what this box is.

What would characterise the behaviour of the steel synchros?

One thing I notice with this box, is that it sometimes wont let you into gears and such when just tootlin' around town, but when you want to go fast, it'll let you shift gears very quickly. Like, a shite load quicker than most of the newer nissan RWD boxes (eg, RB20, RB30, SR20 etc).
