Posted December 28, 200420 yr comment_106369 I was all ready to put my engine back together until I noticed that one of the pistons was different from the rest (second hand engine, see other post). Now it looks like I may have to use my flattop pistons, which didnt come with rods. So....Im thinking of putting the pistons on top of the rods and getting them balanced.Do I really need to get the flywheel, crank etc balanced as well?I dont see why I should, Its not going to be a race car, its not going to see high RPM (max 5.5k) and its just going to be a daily driver. I've heard that the L28 crank is already quite well balanced and as long as its not a racing engine, it shouldnt need to be touched.Any advise from ppl who have been in this situation and balanced/not balanced their internals ?Ray Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/14460-engine-balancingadvise/ Share on other sites
December 28, 200420 yr comment_106383 Hi Ray,For a low rpm street engine, don't worry about balancing the crank/fly,etc.However, if you suspect your pistons are not a matched set, have them balanced. Its a very simple job. A piston and pin should be kept together as a set and should be balanced together. The set of six should be balanced to within plus or minus one half gram (.5 gm.) If the pistons are removed from the rods, have the rods balanced too. Its likely the odd rod/piston assemblewas simply taken from another set and used as a replacement. Therfore the rod balance may be in question also.Phred Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/14460-engine-balancingadvise/#findComment-106383 Share on other sites
December 31, 200420 yr comment_106719 Hi GuysL28 engineI was wondering how much it would cost to have the crank, flywheel, pistons, etc balanced? A rough estimate. How much would it help the revving of the engine? Any help would be appreciatedThanks, Alex Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/14460-engine-balancingadvise/#findComment-106719 Share on other sites
January 12, 200520 yr comment_108361 My machinist is charging me 225$ to do all the above. I don't how many revs it gains you but if your not sure of what you have as far as amatched set I would consider it. I dunno if it makes a difference in the time spent or quality but Is that for a race balance job ?? If there's different balance jobs you can get I guess perhaps some research will be needed, I just know at some point I'm gonna want mine I've heard "race balanced" so it will hold up to a TT conversion and not fall apart Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/14460-engine-balancingadvise/#findComment-108379 Share on other sites
