Posted December 31, 200420 yr comment_106813 Just wondering if anyone has tried using an RB30 crank in the L28 ?Instead of an 83mm stroke(LD28), you would get an 85mm stroke. The main journal diameters are pretty much spot on, so just as long as the lengths between them are the same it hsould sit right in there. I guess the only problem would be getting the right rod and piston height setup. You would need to change the crankshaft sproketand interference between the crank and the block _might_ be an issue...hmm, anything else I am missing ? has it been done before to anyones knowledge ?ray Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/14501-rb30-crank/ Share on other sites
January 1, 200520 yr Author comment_106823 Apparently the bore offsets are the same....hmmm Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/14501-rb30-crank/#findComment-106823 Share on other sites
January 1, 200520 yr Author comment_106840 After thinking it though a bit, the L28 block is not tall enough. You would never get any sort of decent rod/stroke ratios with it. January 1, 200520 yr comment_106843 I was also thinking you're going to have to go pretty short on the rods.....but....really, the stroke is only 2mm larger than the LD28. 2mm isn't going to make that much of a difference. I currently have a L26 in pieces (bare block other than the crank still being in there) and also have access to a RB25 crank. If I get the time this week I'll dummy up the RB crank against the L block. January 2, 200520 yr Author comment_106910 The main thing being though...you could go to a wrecker and get an Rb30 crank for $50....LD28 is another story.Yeah that would be good if you could chuck the RB25 crank in there, would be interesting. I've pretty much resigned the idea of making a hi-po L series though, just not worth it Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/14501-rb30-crank/#findComment-106910 Share on other sites
January 2, 200520 yr comment_106937 Yeh it may well be cheaper to replace the L with a complete RB. Just have to get a inlet manifold for the carbs made up if you wanted to avoid EFI. January 2, 200520 yr comment_106941 ....and a sump, engine mounts, gearbox mounts etc etc Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/14501-rb30-crank/#findComment-106941 Share on other sites
January 2, 200520 yr comment_106946 If this could possibly work you could get a 3.17l Lseries six from basic parts..l24 rods/lz22e pistons 1mm flycut -wih 10.4 compress ratio. ok the rod/stroke ratio if a bit average ie 1.56 but a bit of extra time with balancing would help...and with 3.17 litres you wouldnt need to rev it out as much anywayBut seems a way too good to be true..any one tried to fit one? January 2, 200520 yr comment_106950 I agree it seems way too good to be true. I'll dummy it up some time this week if time permits. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/14501-rb30-crank/#findComment-106950 Share on other sites
January 31, 200520 yr comment_110812 Are RB25 heads hard to come by/ expensive? I've seen an RB30 dynoed before and after a head swap and make 30% at the wheels - no other mods!!! It's in that 21st Century performance book.Turbo it and that'd be an awesome swap...RB30DET. January 31, 200520 yr comment_110847 Not hard to come by, but for the easiest swap you would want an RB25DE but you will not get VCT.I would look for the whole motor for $100-$200 more with loom and ECU, saves hunting later.
