Has anyone been following the auction on Speed channel this weekend? There were comments from Brock Yates and company discussing why japanese cars were not in the event.

The general concensus was there were just too many of these cars mass produced. They did refer to the 240-Z and the Toyota 2000 as possible eventual collectibles, but pretty much said it would unlikely to see many Japanese cars ever in the auction.

Later in the show they mentioned they were getting some feedback about their comments via the web in supprt of japanese cars, and then they made some fairly derogatory statements about the cars, again stating the sheer number of cars produced would preclude collectability.

The comments were made over a backgrouind of dozens of Mustangs, Corvettes and other mass produced Cheveys and Fords selling for prices over 100 thousand dollars, while some ferraris sold for not much more than that.

I wonder if any argument could be made regarding rare Datsuns, Like ZG's, 432's or early Silvias?

Barrett Jackson doesn't control what the wankers at SPEED say on the air. Every idiot has an opinion.

Anyways, the auction that you are watching was completed 11 1/2 months ago (mid January 04). Stay tuned at the end of January 05 for the current auction.

Yeah, I caught the tail end of a comment about MR2s will never getting above two thousand dollars. I think that was the same attitude shared by the “experts” about the 240Z a couple of decades ago. A little verbal masturbation might be expected after endless hours of commentary from those talking heads. For the most part, I learned a lot.

Anyway, B-J will be putting up some Zs on auction. I hope to catch these cars up on the block. I can’t wait to hear their commentary on them. :lick:

How about the dealer-produced Scarabes (spelling)? The Z's with a Chevy 350SB. I heard good examples of those go for some good sums of money.

The Ford Mustangs, And Chevy Corvettes were selling for more than the Ferraris for the simple reason that the mustangs that went on the auction where really rare like the Shelby GT500 (sold for 240, 000$). The Corevettes went for big bucks as well because they were the rarer 427 Corvettes (one car sold for 140, 000$ but I believe it had been owned by someone increasing its value). The Ferrari built cars didnt far so well because they were all 2 + 2 exemples which have never really been considered a *real* Ferrari. The Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona sold for around 60, 000$. The other Ferraris there were the 550 Barchetta 180 000$, 355 Berlinetta 100 000$ and the 360 Modena race car 100 000$.

Scarab's were manuafactured by Brian Morrow's Scarab Engineering and well cared for examples do command nice prices.

Yea I saw & heard that comment. I for one would much rather see a nicely redone early Z than 50 '57 Chevies or Hot Rods. To each his own. I wonder what they might think of my '78 280Z in another 20 years. Heck if someone collects an '51 Mercury.....

I had the auction on Yesterday (1/1) when they made that comment! I remember somebody (not Alain) remarked that more of them would have to get rusted away before they would get considerably more valuable.

RUSTED!!??

So why do we go to the great lengths to preserve OUR CARS so they are rust-free or repaired? so we can give them away someday?

I would suggest to everybody here to go to the B-J website or email them information@barrett-jackson.com, and also tell the speople at SPEEDTV.com the same thing, to complain about the deraugatory comments made by the on-air people about such a famous car! The MOST POPLUAR SPORTSCAR in the U.S.A!!

I agree, but as they say, "we have freedom in the country." Yeah, even the freedom to put your foot ALL THE WAY into your mouth.

I think if enough people send emails or comments to SPEEDTV, then maybe they might ask him (maybe) to not make any mentions about the Z-cars at all, if not good ones.

You think some 'anonymous' person could threaten with a lawsuit because Mr. Yates' comment caused his concours-winning car to sell for $10,000 less than what it was worth? LOL

The way I look at it, it's good that these over stuffed collector car "investers" are steering clear of japanese cars.

At least this way, we still have a chance of one day owning a real z432,

a ZG, or even a 2000GT. I hope these cars never reach the rediculously inflated prices that would push them out of the price range of the people who truely appreciate them.

I however hope that one day the collector car industry will one day recognize that these cars deserve the same respect and clout that any of the American or european cars command.

Mr. Yates mentioned Hondas in the same comment! I mean that he said they woun't be valuable enough to see them at the B-J auctions in the foreseeable future.

That much I agree with, and it makes me happy (no offense to honda people). Mostly because they still make those cars in quantity, and to me, a car becomes collectable as soon as they cutback or cease production. Even though some people occasionally use the term, "instant collectable," or whatever. No such thing to me.

Yeah, it means us ordinary-types (are Zed-fans "ordinary?") can snatch them up for cheap, then get rich off the snobs later!
