I have a question about car ins. is there a company out there that will provide a policy for the proper value of the car. I bought my Z a '73 for only $500. but have like most of us put much more than that into it. Before I spend $600. on body work and $1500. on paint I want to find out what I can expect from an insurance co . , after the work is all done and I get T - boned , that is becides the shaft. I presently have Farmers . I have AAAA driving record , zero tickets , no accidents, in last 40 +yrs. , and the Z is an occasional driver, at least as far as they are concerned. I also have a truck and my wife has her own car. Any input is apriciated thanks .

I'm in the process of doing this right now.

I'm going to be going with a local guy, but the information is the same. Go with Classic Car insurance. (I did a search on the net and came up with a few places nationwide, one being a local Texas based company)

They take some pictures of the car, you both setup an agreed-upon value, and there will be some mileage restrictions.

Mine will be a full coverage policy, $5000 agreed value, w/ a 5000 mile mileage limit per year. All for only $125 for the entire year!

I have collector car insurance policy with CNA that I got through Hagerty Insurance (www.hagerty.com). I pay $75 a year to insure my Z for $6K. I don't have all the other specifics but I do remember that I have resonably high limits for liability, they require coverage to be as high as other policies, but I don't have collision or comp. Also, I thought it was an "Agreed Value" but I haven't looked in a while. Hmm... maybe I better confirm that.

With your regular insurance company you are paying for what might happen, you are judged by all other drivers and you pay for the privelage of having insurance through a company that charges all its customers based on all other policy holders and their claims records. Drive a sports car? They charge not only by the replacement value of the car, and the cost of repairing it, but you are judged by the statistical probability that you will drive like an idiot because they already have paid out numerous claims for just that reason. They use accident statistics based on age, sex, type of car, region you live in, theft rates for the model car, repair costs for that brand or model, etc, etc, etc. Basically you are paying for others mistakes.

With a collector car insurance company you are paying for what your car is really worth. They only insure people with older, more collectible cars. They know you aren't going to drive a lot, and you will more than likely be a safer and better driver because of what you are driving. It's nice to be charged for what you drive, and by your driving record, not by being compared to all the other drivers on the road, past and present.
