Puzzling Oil Leak

Nope

Put new seals in twice and still did not fix the problem. Oil was getting past the seal so the only thing i can think of is that something was out of shape with age.

Suprisingly, Auto One had the new pump on the shelf - nearly fell over when I asked about it and he brought one straight out. Looks a little tacky at first compared to OEM but works great. check my gallery - it polished up pretty good. :nervous:

Which seal are you referring to?

The diagrams I have access only show a oil seal at the bottom of the rubber diaphram.

Should there be onebefore the pivot arm?

Hi Zedrally

I just bought a new kit which included the diapragm and a few other odds and sods.

My first reaction was that I was losing oil through the gasket on the head. Replaced those.

My second choice was that I was getting oil coming out of the pivot arm pin. Plugged up the holes with little success.

This was really starting to annoy me as it was throwing oil over everything. Spoke to another Zed owner and he told me he had the same problem. New pump for him and no oil. New pump for me and no oil. New pump for Zedrally??? :ermm:

Sounds to me like you need to just replace the fuel pump.or rebuild the unit you have.kits are available.

If you had read the whole thread you would realise that re-building hasn't solved the problem for those that had!

Therefore there must be another reason for the cause, no-one has been able to offer any more insight as to why this should occur.

A reasonable answer is that a slug buildup occurs rear of the pivot are, the oil that accumulates behind the buildup finds it's way out through the breather.

Unfortunatly, as mentioned in a previous post, I'm unable to confirm or deny this as I had foolishly cleaned the internals of the pump, before realising this may have been the cause and thus was unable to perform a through inspection, looking for any buildup/obstruction.

Time will only tell...

I have an original fuel pump on my 240 (70') It has never leaked. There are NO breather holes on it other than the 2 pin holes on the lower diaphram area, one in the front and one in the rear. the holes are directly located under the inlet and outlet tubes on the lower half of the pump.

Does any one have a camera?? if you give me a minute or two, I'll take a picture and load it up on here to describe it better.

Look I don't even know if it's the pump thats even leaking.but if it is leaking at either of the body diaphragm gaskets it needs to be rebuilt.if it's leaking out of the pivots on either side of the pump than it needs to be replaced. but if it's leaking out of the small breather holes on the lower case than you could very well have had some sludge build-up in the pump which case a good rebuild would take care of. if cleaning the pump and or rebuilding the pump does not help and its still leaking out of the lower breathers[if so equ] than you may have excessive crank case pressure due to passage blockage or cylinder blow-by[weak sealing piston rings].which does'nt really sound like the problem.there are so many posibilities of oil leak locations.like just to the left of the pump just below the engine removal hook at the cylinder head to block.I'm talking about the oil pressure port at the front of the cylinder head,it comes from the cam pressure feed and goes to the t-chain tensioner.this passage is not shown in early drawings,but it's there.and of course the front cover.Hay you never know maybe the oil pressures higher than it was the other day and it's coming out to say HI! :D
