Where's my Clutch!!

Have just installed a new motor and cannot get the clutch to work.

Have put in new master cylinder as well as thrust bearing, pressure and clutch plate.

The strange thing is that I can literally push the thrust bearing lever that comes out of the gearbox with little resistance. It does not even bounce back as one would expect if it is supposed to push the fingers in on the pressure plate. The pushrod on the slave cylinder practically falls out. :tapemouth

Would this mean that the thrust bearing is not sitting on the lever correctly and if so, is it somehow possible to fix this without removing gearbox by going through the dust cover (I am not keen on doing this again!!). :disappoin

IMO it sounds like the "thrust bearing" isn't contacting the fingers on the pressure plate, or that the pressure plate isn't operating properly. Unfortunately I doubt there is anything that can done to resolve the issue without pulling the transmission out.

Did you swap transmissions (4 speed to a 5 speed, or use any different parts like a different lever or thrust bearing collar) besides the bearing, pressure plate, clutch disc?

Hi Bambi

Same gearbox and same lever, only new bearing. pressure and clutch plate. Pressure and clutch plate was put on the motor by top mechanic.

I am thinking along the same lines as you but am looking for inspiration :(

Oooh, I wonder if the little wire clip on the other end of the lever that grabs the "pivot ball" (mounted on the face of the transmission) has broken or is not securing the lever to the ball. That might allow the lever to move as you describe without actually operating the bearing against the pressure plate.

I'm guessing here, but if it is, you might be able to see that through the dust cover.

Bambi, aren't there two "ears" on the thrust bearing collar? Maybe fork got bumped during installation and came undone from "ears" (collar rotated). This could also cause spring clip to come undone from pivot ball (I think from no resistence at end of fork opposite slave cylinder?). I'd drop the slave cylinder and pull boot from fork and have a good look. Maybe possible to re-engage fork to "ears" and spring clip to pivot without dropping trany. Good to have a look see anyway before pulling gearbox.

Could be. As you say better to have a look before dropping tranny. (It doesn't cost anything but time to look)

Thanks guys

Will remove the dust cover and see if I can see what is going on. But there is not much room to move in there so i have been building myself up by telling myself it is only about a dozen bolts to get the tranny out. :cheeky:

It is just getting the car up high enough and getting the shaft back in that is the hard part.

Hope the missus is not too tired when she gets home from work to pitch in and also listen to my expletives :hurt:

Hey biker, you said that you replaced the throwout bearing ... but... did you just have a new bearing pressed on to the old collar or did you buy a new bearing-collar set? If you got a set they might have sold you the wrong one. I could be wrong on this but I remember someone telling me that the 5 speed collar is shorter than the 4 speed and if you use the wrong one you wont be able to put it in gear. but before you do that check the adjustment on your slave cylinder and make sure its set right(im sure you did that anyway) the only other thing that I can think of would be that the fork wasn't on right. Hi Guys

The saga continued hence why I thought I would mention no more until the problem was resolved.

Zeiss150, you were on the mark. There are several collar sizes for the thrust bearing. Mine was too short and hence it was not contacting the fingers. Got a new one and fixed the problem but still no clutch. :(

In my current thought "lets put in new parts whilst I am at it", backfired.

Got a new master cylinder from Nissan Aust. Original type and 5/8 piston. Also got a new slave cylinder from Nissan as well except this was made by PBR which manufactures clutch/brake parts. Not a second thought as I got it from Nissan. Still no clutch which meant having to trailer the car to a mechanic 100klms away.

Turned out that the PBR slave cyulinder (purchased from Nissan) was the wrong size :mad: They supplied a 7/8 piston slave cylinder when it should have been a 3/4 to match the 5/8 master cylinder. The master cylinder could not keep the fluid pressure up to the larger slave cylinder. (another lesson learnt for young players! :finger:

Mechanic put new 3/4 slave cylinder on and away we went.

By the way - car goes like a rocket on quick test drive with new L28 motor in. :D

Looked at Post 4 but missed Post 2 whereby you broke my heart by saying that the box had to come out :(

Anyway took the car for drive last night for a bout 30klms and its feels good. :)

Now just have to get the wheel alignment done, a sparky to check over the electrics, check over the tightness of the bolts and then for a run into the hills on the weekend. :D

Why do you blokes like chopped liver????
