Pop Up Ads

Recommended Posts

Over the past few weeks, everytime I load up the club page, up pops an ad for cars for sale. Sometimes it even happens when jumping between threads.

If this is making money for the site, then that's ok. But just checking that the site is not being hijacked by trusty used car salesmen. :ermm:

You may have gotten some kind of adware in your computer. Run a program like Ad-aware 6.0 and it should find it and remove it.

Don't get Ad-aware 6.0 get Ad-aware SE it's the newest version and catches MUCH more. In addition to Ad-aware you should also go ahead and get Spybot and run it (they catch different programs on your system). As a friendly tip, if you are running something like Kazaa then you should use extreme caution in allowing either of these programs to remove things as there is certain 'spyware' that Kazaa and others like it require to run properly. Catch 22. :(

Also, if pop-up bother you as they do me get a pop-up blocker! You can get one for as little as $20 and it's well worth the investment.

Yes, get spybot search and destroy.

Depending on your opretating system (ie windows XP) you can upgrade internet explorer, they have finally built in new security measures, including a pop up blocker.

or you can switch to a different browser like firefox, as most of this ad stuff it targeted at IE.

Blocking the popups is only hiding the problem. Your computer constantly displaying and calling popup sites affects you computer's performance in many ways (sort of like putting a 1" muffler on your Z). You have to find the root cause of the popups. You should run both Ad-Aware and Spybots Search & Destroy. If that solves your problem then make sure that you continue to update the definition files for both Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D at least weely and re-scan your computer constantly. You will be suprised to see how much crap these idiots are putting on your computer. Some popup producing problems are a result of a virus like program that has installed itself on your computer. They are pretty hard to get off. NEVER -EVER -EVER install Kaza on your computer. Kaza turns your computer into a server for anything that you have downloaded from them and opens up your computer for anyone to send you crap you don't want. It also significantly effects the performance of your internet connection because your bandwidth is being used to pass files to other computers. If you have Kaza installed, uninstall it and delete or move the directory somewhere else.

Back to the popups, Do a Ctrl + Alt + Delete and select Task List and go to the Processes Tab. Look at each process (there's a few) and search each one Google. There are sites out there that will define and rate each processes security risk and have further information on how to get it off if it's bad. Hope that helps and PM me if you need any help.....I work with these problems every day.

Not necessarily, many many sites have this set up when the pages load or on other events. Just go to geocities which I believe uses pop-ups to advertise and generate income for all the free websites they host for people.

Yes, these are EXTREMELY hard to get rid of so make sure you protect yourself.

There are ways around some of this. I have Kazaa installed on an old slower computer (PII 400) that is used for next to nothing so the pop-ups etc on it do not affect me. Furthermore, I do not leave it running...clicking close or the X does not do it, you must select it from the system tray and choose close from that menu. Next, I have also adjusted the settings so that downloads are not permitted from my system (I think it's called do not share my files). Plus if/when I download something I immediately move it off that computer all together. Yes, this program or any P2P software WILL slow down your internet connection when it's in use. Now I will warn you that Kazaa installs all kinds of crap with it that you can not uninstall otherwise Kazaa will not work either. This is another good reason to install it on an old machine you would otherwise get rid of.

Hope people find this thread helpful and full of information. :)

While i'm here, if you are using windows, get avast antivirus, its free for personal use, and use zone alarm it also free, its a firewall that will keep other types of virus (worms) and hackers out of your computer. Search fro them on google.
Oh Yeh XP Service Pack 2 not only has popup blocker but also includes a firewall. Both of whicj you should have. Especially if you have DSL.

We use Zone Alarm at work and it seems to be pretty good (personally I think that this is over kill here as we are behind countless firewalls - I work for IBM); it's mostly used on our laptops and I only turn it on when traveling and using networks I do not know or control (i.e. I don't use it at home but I do in hotels or other companies).

If you have DSL or even Cable (i.e. Roadrunner) I would suggest a hardware firewall too. Something like the Linksys or Netgear or other brand broad band routers available as they have a built in firewall and also allow you to share that connection to all the computers in your house (you may need additional equipment depending on how many computers you have and where they are located).

Better over protected than under protected!!

Nope, we haven't made any kinds of deals with the devil. ;) You'll *NEVER* see pop up ads on our site. Never never never never....

I wouldn't think a used car salesman would go that low... well... maybe.
