Tire Size?

CoastGuardZ

Recommended Posts

I know it's a topic that has been touched on before but I have not found what I am looking for using the search.

Here's what I've got... '72 240Z all stock. I have a set of aluminum ZX 6 spoke 14x6 wheels. I have seen a set of 215 60's and 205 60's on a 240 but I would like to know if anyone has tried a 205 70 r14. If so, do you have any pictures? I am afraid that the tire will look too tall on the car but the speedometer will be extremely close to accurate if I go with the size. I plan on purchasing a set of Yokohama Avid T4's for these rim's but I am reluctant about which size to purchase.

Any tips, comments or concerns would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Nate

I thought that the stock size on a 240Z was 175R14 which is roughly the same height as a 19570R14 which would make a 20570R14 a little to tall. I have 22560R14 Yokohama A509s on mine which I know are too tall and the speedo is off but they're also wide they don't rub and I like 'em.

Thanks Carl! That's exactly the kind of info I was looking for.

Anybody else have any input?

If I go with the 60's what speedo gear would I need to get it right? If I go with the 60's then I will most likely go with the 215 60's. I hear the 225's rub or come real close to rubbing (the strut maybe?).

Thanks again

I think you are right, 205/70 X 14 is too tall. (if mine were shorter, they wouldn't rub)

I've used 205/60 X 14 (on a 14 X 7 rim) and they worked fine (except the speedo was off a bit)

Stephen,

From what I was gathered the 175R14 was the early Z tire. When they switched to the wider rim they went to the 185R14. If I am mistaken please correct me. If I was to use a 225 how much do they "bubble" out? I'm not looking to get a real bubbly effect.

Thanks for the input Stephen... I got the wheels last night & can't wait to put them on the car which should be here tomorrow!!!

The 225 does bubble out a little on my car but my rims are the 260/280Z factory alloy which are 5.5" wide as opposed to 6". The come really close to the front struts but mine don't rub. I had 20560R14 Dunlop D60A2 tires on those 6 spokes when they were on my car. They were a nice fit both heigth wise and width wise and didn't bubble as much as my present setup. Remember, we're comparing a 72 to a 78. I don't know if that makes a difference clearance wise or not.

Yeah, that has been one of my concerns, the 240 vs. later models. As the car got heavier how did the suspension change? It looks as though I will go with the 215 60 R14.

Any input on how to adjust the speedo to make it accurate? How about the speedo gears? This tire selection will cause the speedo to be off by 5-6%. Meaning that at 60 it will indicate 63-ish.
