Gasoline Fumes In The Car!?

Datsun-Fever

Recommended Posts

Old car guy statement: "If you smell gasoline, you have a leak." Gas fumes are dangerous and you really need to track it down. A vent hose leak will tend to smell when you fill the car up with gas. A fuel pressure leak will tend to smell when the car is running. You mentioned putting a new fuel pump on. Go back and check your work and the vent hoses around the tank. Good luck.

You need to determine if it's raw gasoline you're smelling or just the standard exhaust fumes getting sucked into the hatch. If it really is fuel and the fumes are coming from the engine (resulting from work on the fuel pump) then there should be a visible leak. More likely it's coming from the fuel tank itself by way of the aforementioned vent hoses. You may smell more fuel right after filling up the tank or when sliding around corners (we all know you do that) thus causing the fuel to slosh around a bit.

I have spent so much time and money on the fuel smell problem and cannot find it. I can go months w/o smell and then it happens again. I have read all old threads on the subject and still have the problem after trying suggestions. Only solution is to roll down the windows, but you can still smell.

If you're smelling fuel and not exhaust then it's quite likely that you only get the smell after filling up the tank. There are a number of vent hoses that may be deteriorating and allowing fumes into the passenger compartment.

i had the same thing with the intermitent gas smell and always on startup...but had no leaks... i cleaned out my throttle body and air intake last night and it was so thick with black stuff i had to scrub it forever... now my car runs perfect and absolutely NO gas smells at all... you might try that.. not to mention its an easy thing to do...took me maybe an hour tops..
