Tinted windows on a 240Z

The car that I am interested in has tinted windows !!!! I am not a real fan of tinted glass on a 240Z But on this car it does not look bad !! I guess Florida cars need it to help keep some heat out !!! Did anyone ever try to remove tint !!! What do other club members feel about tinted glass on a 240Z ????

I used to have some on my side windows. It's just a film that can be peeled off fairly easily but may require a razor blade to scrape. You can't really put any on the quarter windows because they aren't flat enough. I decided that it wasn't worth it and took it off.

Huge fan of tinted windows. The new tints use a metal in them so that they don't fade to purple and they reflect more heat. I have tinted every truck I've ever had which have all been black so the tint helped a lot along with a silver metalic front window shade when parked. I have not seen a 240 with tint yet and I am debating on tinting mine.

A note on removing old tint: Most tint shops use amonia sprayed on tint to remove it. This being said, you should not use a window cleaner that contains amonia, ie: Windex. Eagle One 20/20 does not contain amonia and is safe for tint. I also recommend that you use a professional tint shop to install tint. They know what they are doing, can tint any window, and will guarantee their work.

I also enjoy window tint. There is nothing like a little bit of privacy. Personally I wouldn't recommend a highly reflective tint on a solid color. But on colors like silver or other metalics that's a different story.

Like CoastguardZ said, ammonia sprayed on tint will dissolve the glue that attaches it to the glass. When I used to work at a tint shop we would spray the glass with ammonia. Cover it with a black trash bag so the ammonia wouldn't drip. Let it sit for an hour or so. Then the old tint would peel off. Final cleaning with a razor would leave things nice and clean.

MikeW, even though the quarter windows aren't flat one piece of tint can be applied to it. It does however need a lot of work and a blow dryer.

Edit: The drivers side window is open.

my pass truck window tint has turned wavey like looking through warped glass.(u know like antique glass) when u described soaking with ammonia and putting a garbage bag over it, is that with the window still installed or do u take the window out and lay it flat.

oh yea- which side is tinted-inside or outside. hope this isn't a dumb question.

I have tinted the windows in almost all of my Zs. With patience and time you can do as good ajob as any shop, if you want it done fast, take it to somone.

It is tricky to get the hatch glass tinted in one piece of film. I have never had a problem tinting the quarter windows with one piece. I usuall do the hatch glass in three pieces, and place the seams at the defroster lines.

I am going to tint all of the windows on my 240, while they are off the car-much easier in a climate controlled atmosphere. I am using a sputtered titamium film with the highest heat rejection and lowest light absorbtion I could find, something like 17% tint, I am hoping to do all of the windows-including the windshield-to help out the A/C. The dash was clearly the largest source of stored heat when I checked all of the surfaces with and IR thermometer after a day in the Ga. sunshine. Georgia recently changed its tinting laws, but 17% would never have caused a problem anyway.

PS. the inside of the windows are tinted, and you can usually peel the tint off and wipe off the adhesive with amonia, or shave it with a razor blade-but be carefull, you can scratch the window doing it that way. I usually use fine brasswool and amonia or laquer thinner to get adhesive (or overspray) off the glass, the brass wool will not scratch the glass, or leave particles to rust as steel wool can.

Here in SC the law is 30%. The police WILL check if they pull you over, most carry the light gauge in their cruisers. My Frontier has a black 3M film on it that has a "metalic" content to it so that it reflects heat but the tint does not look silver or metalic in any way. I believe the film is 34% and after being applied to the window it equates to 32%... Legal for SC. I have a guy locally I've been using since high school and he charged $50 for my truck and was finished in about 30 minutes. The 3M film is guaranteed for life and he guarantees his work completely. On my last truck after all the bubbles and haze went away, about 5 days, it became evident that the passenger window had a small bug trapped between the glass and film. No problem he replaced the piece and it was perfect.

Zhead240: the film is applied to the interior side of the glass.

Also here is a pic of the Frontier @ 32%. Still had the stock tires...

Nice Truck Nate. My Z has tinted door glass and quarter glass. I like it in the Nebraska summer, lots of sunshine. Had a tinted "240Z" band at the top of the windshield but took it off due to the lettering peeling.

My Xterra's rear doors and rear cargo glass are tinted as well. Makes it a little harder to see what goodies I just bought at Best Buy!!

ChrisA,

According to BestBuy(and Critchfield, and every other electronics store), they don't have anything that fits a 240Z-where are your priorities when it comes to disposable income? God forbid you spend money on anything but the 3 necessities (gas, oil and anything else you need for the Z). Food, Clothing and Shelter are over rated...

Window tint and rally clocks fall into the anything else group!
