Posted February 5, 200520 yr comment_111372 There were 3 Datsun Z-cars at this year's Barrett-Jackson Auto Auction in Scotsdale, AZ that took place last weekend. The '72 went way too cheap for a full restoration. Selling a car with no reserve can be very risky! I don't think the people who attend & bid on cars at the Barrett-Jackson auctions are ready for Zs yet and Zs are ready for the Barrett-Jackson auction yet either. February 5, 200520 yr comment_111376 too bad they don't have a pic of the 72. I wonder how "restored" it really is? Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/14873-z-cars-at-barrett-jackson-auction/#findComment-111376 Share on other sites
February 5, 200520 yr comment_111381 I read a review that said the '72 was oversold, Carl. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/14873-z-cars-at-barrett-jackson-auction/#findComment-111381 Share on other sites

February 5, 200520 yr comment_111390 I thought the 71 was oversold. Yes it was nice, very nice. But IMHO it just had too much of a mix match of too many Z’s parts that just did not make it a perfect example. What I mean here is that he had everything from Fairlady Z emblems, 300ZX seats, a custom non-stock console, Alpine stereo, to an I don’t know what steering wheel in an otherwise beautiful non-original color. Now, I am not a purist believing that a Z must be totally stock. You would not get points off in my book if you had a 5 spd, different rear end, bigger radiator, larger wheels etc. But this was a bit over the top. The owner certainly was up front about the car calling it a custom, high performance restoration with the emphasis on custon. Unquestionably the owner put a lot into it. He had a one-page laundry list of all that he had done to the car, which was certainly very impressive. Also impressive was the credentials he wrote about like it being featured in Hot Rod Magazine. This is all great and wonderful but a representation of a US spec 71 Datsun 240Z it was not. A Z rod yes. At B&J’s, I think he was lucky to get what he got. Oh, and I would take Dreco’s over this one any day…… Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/14873-z-cars-at-barrett-jackson-auction/#findComment-111390 Share on other sites
February 5, 200520 yr comment_111404 I always assumed a stock, mint 240Z would always go for more money. And thanks, ZIII Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/14873-z-cars-at-barrett-jackson-auction/#findComment-111404 Share on other sites
February 5, 200520 yr comment_111426 Haggerty insurance has photos of all the cars on the blcoks. February 5, 200520 yr Author comment_111448 That's pretty cool Deadflo how you found the blocks shots! I didn't know Haggerty even did that! I probably caught 6 or 7 hours total of the auction over the 3 days it was on Speed Channel, but I didn't see any of the three Zs that were up for auction. Does anyone know if any of them made it on TV? If so, I am very curious to hear what the comments were. February 5, 200520 yr comment_111449 I watched the auction all of Saturday and Sunday, and most of Thursday and Friday. I didn't see any of them on TV. But I did hear some lame talk on a variety of subjects (mostly from Brock Yates). February 5, 200520 yr comment_111452 So send Speedtv.com a message telling them you thought Mr. Yates belongs on some late-night men-only TV program on the Spike channel with the things he says...
